Community-driven litigation for racial, social, and economic justice

Over ons

Systemic Justice seeks to radically transform how the law works for communities fighting for racial, social, and economic justice. Centering affected communities in joint litigation, Systemic Justice will help broaden access to judicial remedies for those fighting for justice and equality. This will help dismantle the power structures that underpin and fuel racial, social, and economic injustice.

  • After COP29, there has been a lot of debate on what climate justice really means. At our Reclaiming Climate Justice Summit held in October, we asked BIPOC climate leaders to envision what it means to them. Their responses were centred on the voices that are too often left out of global climate discussions – as climate spaces tend to focus on solutions without addressing the intersection of the climate crisis and various systems of oppression. What do you think is the most important step towards achieving climate justice? • In Belgium, five women who had been forcibly removed from their families during Belgian colonial rule in the Congo have been awarded reparations for the systemic discrimination and harm they endured, with the courts recognising that this state-sanctioned kidnapping of children born to a Black mother and a white father was a crime against humanity. This is a powerful example of groups using the law to challenge injustices and demand accountability. 💭 Do you believe that law can be used as a tool for change? Let us know what you think!

  • How can communities and movements use the courts to drive their causes and campaigns? We've developed a Community toolkit for change to help answer this question and build the knowledge and power of communities fighting for racial, social, and economic justice. Here’s what’s included: 📘 Strategic litigation: A guide for legal action Litigation can be a powerful tool for systemic change. This guide breaks down the essential components of strategic litigation, offering real-world examples to help you understand its role in advancing justice—both inside and outside the courtroom. 📖 Words for justice: A glossary of essential legal terms Legal language shouldn’t be a barrier to justice. This glossary demystifies legal terminology so communities can integrate legal tools into their advocacy on their own terms. 💬 How can we use the courts? A conversation starter This is a simple document with questions that you can bring into community spaces to spark discussions on how litigation could support your vision for change. This resource helps you identify actionable steps to develop a community-driven legal strategy. Legal knowledge shouldn’t exclusively sit with lawyers or legal advisors. When it does, it cannot serve justice for all. This is why when developing these resources, we’ve prioritised clarity and accessibility. The toolkit is available in multiple languages: English, French, Spanish, Danish, and Turkish. 🔗 Explore the toolkit and download the resources here: https://lnkd.in/gTJmZqiN

  • "Revolution is not a one-time event." – Audre Lorde 🗞️ Last Tuesday, Shell won an appeal against a groundbreaking 2021 Dutch court ruling that required the company to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. The outcome of Shell’s appeal may feel like a setback, but let's be clear: it won’t end the wave of climate lawsuits demanding accountability from corporations. Real, lasting change through the courts doesn’t come from a single dramatic showdown. It happens long before a case reaches the courtroom: by building trust-based relationships, centring affected communities, and crafting strategies that go beyond winning a judgment. At Systemic Justice, we’re working alongside communities across Europe to make litigation a tool for systemic change. It may not be fast, but when done right, it reshapes entire systems. 👉🏽 Dive into our blog to learn how this deliberate, community-led approach is driving meaningful progress: https://lnkd.in/ehw5keTw
