"I'm not really looking." "I'm comfortable where I am." Those were the exact words from a lawyer I recently placed during our very first conversation. Let me take you back three weeks to how it all unfolded... I reached out to a lawyer working at a great Silver Circle law firm. On the surface, everything looked great: he was on track for a promotion, earning a hefty salary, and excelling in his role. But behind the scenes, the long hours were taking a toll—impacting his health and leaving no time for friends, family, or even himself. I introduced him to an opportunity for a Legal Counsel role at a fast-growing tech company. At first, he wasn't convinced. He said things like: "I'm not really looking," "I'm comfortable where I am," "I haven't really thought about in-house." Fair points, right? But after explaining the benefits of going in-house and suggesting he have an exploratory conversation with the client, he was willing to at least hear them out. So, we scheduled the call. The call went exceptionally well. After just one more Teams meeting and a face-to-face interview, the company made an offer—which he accepted. Now? He works more reasonable hours, feels connected to the business, and enjoys being more involved on the commercial side of things. The lesson? What might not seem ideal at first glance can evolve into something far better. All it takes is that first step.

One of my favourite parts of my job is talking to in-house teams about their biggest challenges. It helps us step into their shoes and do our job better. This week, I co-hosted the first of a Legal Counsel Roundtable series. It's facilitated, peer-to-peer discussion among in-house counsel on practical issues affecting them. Chatham House Rules and smaller groups allowed for easier discussion of: 1. Why the in-house team is important and contributes to the success of the organisation. 2. How the team manages risk in a helpful way. 3. The advantages of building relationships with in-house lawyers and commercial managers so that the organisation seeks you out early.
