Kicking off my last Wellcome Tuesday reflections with three deadly letters: AMR. If you work in the world of global health you need to have been under a rather large rock if you did not know that 2024 was all about the acronym that means antimicrobial resistance. And a large proportion of my year has been spent talking about those three little letters that are anticipated to kill one person every 20 seconds by 2050. For me, this work has been wide-reaching, coordinating Wellcome’s work internally to maximise the full weight of our research, influence and engagement, pushing for equity throughout. There are two particular projects I’ve been heavily involved in that stand out. Firstly, working with DeepSeer to use advanced social listening techniques to better understand what key diplomat and domestic decision-maker audiences are talking about – and Wellcome will be publishing some of those findings soon. The other has been the AMR Comms Coalition, funded by Wellcome and led by UN Foundation. This has been a way to identify the common themes across the broad AMR community… and led to the development of the AMR Messaging Guide. https://lnkd.in/eJ5Cr7SZ Key reflections: 🗯️ Enabling a neutral organisation to be the convener of the AMR Comms Coalition meant that whilst remaining a central part of the AMR conversation, Wellcome was able to provide a platform for others and wasn’t seen to dominate a conversation that it only had partial legitimacy to do so. To me this felt like it bolstered not diminished the brand, showing that sometimes a quieter role is a more impactful one. 🚀  I’m perhaps projecting, but I think using strategic communications as a lever for impact with a usually policy focused audience demonstrated the power of ensuring awareness of the bigger picture to ensure messages and policy recommendations had appropriate cut-through. Whilst subtle I think this was quite a cultural shift for some. 👉  It was possible to be a player in the AMR Comms Coalition in parallel to delivering a wide-range of Wellcome branded communications pushing for our policy recommendations. Yesterday we hosted a fantastic session discussing the critical aspects of "Power and Accountability: Shaping Governance for Global Health." A top priority for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is reducing the burden of infectious disease. Globally, there’s a lot of progress to be excited about.       Here's a glimpse:    1️⃣ Currently over 3,000 people die from TB per day. Hopefully, one day this will no longer be the case. 🚨 Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to global health, impacting millions of lives worldwide. This is why the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Health & Healthcare is raising awareness and driving action to combat this growing crisis. 💬 As Christopher Murray, Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, explains, "Antimicrobial resistance is when bacteria or pathogens are able to avoid the effects of an antibiotic... if you get one of those infections and you're counting on an antibiotic saving your life, for example, and they don't work well, that leads to much worse outcomes." 💥 1.25 million deaths are directly attributable to resistant infections, and nearly 5 million deaths are associated with bacterial infections where antibiotics are no longer effective. 🗯 Dame Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on AMR, underscores the urgency: "The World Health Organization listed antimicrobial resistance as one of its top 10 threats facing humanity. We need to start with preventing infections. But then we need to use antibiotics effectively and have a strong pipeline. This matters to everyone on the planet, and everyone's got to play their role." Strategies to tackle AMR include: 👉 R&D Investment: Fostering a robust pipeline of new antibiotics through public and private sector collaboration. 👉 Stewardship Programmes: Promoting the appropriate use of antibiotics to prevent misuse and overuse. 👉 Preventative Measures: Implementing effective infection control practices and vaccination programs. We must act now to prevent AMR from reversing decades of medical progress. Ending malaria is not only the right thing to do - saving millions of children's lives. It's also the right thing to do for the economy. Boosting the African economy by $16bn a year. That's $127bn cumulative growth to African economy between 2023 and 2030. Come on G7 leaders, we have a golden opportunity to accelerate the fight against malaria with the GAVI and GF replenishments on the horizon .

How can policy better support people with metastatic breast cancer (MBC)? A set of four policy briefs outlining how we can begin to reduce inequalities in MBC care has been recently published. The first of the policy briefs – ‘Reducing inequalities in metastatic breast cancer care: an overview’ – provides a summary of the impact of MBC and the current landscape of care. It sets out three areas of focus for policymakers, which will be explored in more detail in the subsequent three policy briefs. Though MBC is largely incurable, new and ever-emerging treatments can allow people with MBC to live longer, fulfilling lives. Yet many MBC patients experience barriers in access to best-practice care, with people from underserved communities facing exacerbated disparities.
