21 European countries unite in the new four-year EU Joint Action called JACARDI (the Joint Action on Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes) funded by the EU4Health programme to reduce the burden of Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases. JACARDI is coordinated by the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) and has received €53 million in funding from the European Commission, bringing together 76 partners and over 300 public health experts with the aim to deploy 142 pilot projects across Europe, covering the entire patient journey: from improving health literacy and awareness, enhancing screening and primary prevention among high-risk populations. National Directorate General for Hospitals (OKFŐ) is excited to participate in JACARDI as an Affiliated Entity and looks forward to implementing 2 pilot projects besides taking part in the organisation and evaluation of science communication trainings, which aim to ensure the sustainability of the project's professional outcomes. One of the pilots of OKFŐ is linked to the work package obtaining up-to-date information about screening practices for diabetes, CVD and their risk factors in the Member States. The other pilot OKFŐ will coordinate is within the framework of the work package dedicated to the improvement of integrated patient care pathways and prevention, with a focus on planning and monitoring personalised patient care pathways with the involvement of hospitals and general practitioners. Engaging in a global collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), we are dedicated to providing comprehensive support in medication adherence, particularly within the context of tuberculosis (TB) treatment. As a recommended practice in our collaborative efforts, the Morisky Medication Adherence Protocol is integrated into the assessment framework, specifically the Morisky Green Levine (MGL) questionnaire. This strategic partnership allows us to contribute valuable insights and tools to enhance adherence to TB treatment protocols. The Morisky Protocol, specifically the MGL, serves as an effective means of evaluating and addressing medication adherence challenges. By suggesting the incorporation of these assessment practices, we aim to fortify MSF's efforts in delivering impactful healthcare solutions, ensuring that patients receive optimal support on their treatment journeys in diverse and often challenging environments. 📋Are we on track to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 2030? 🗓️ Next week, the WHO Regional Office for Europe, JA PreventNCD, and JACARDI will come together for a joint event in Brussels (10 September 2024) to assess the progress towards the global targets for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Hosted by Sciensano, this meeting will facilitate discussions between national health ministries, #PublicHealth agencies, #NCD prevention experts and stakeholders from across the EU. Sepsis at the World Health Assembly. 🔥Sepsis is a major public health problem (often overlooked). Although little known, this vital emergency is one of the world's leading causes of mortality, on a par with cancer and cardiovascular disease. According to the WHO, sepsis accounts for 20% of all deaths (excluding pandemics). It costs 0.5% of US GDP. 0.3% been related to ICU and further hospitalisation during the long recovery time. This figure is probably similar in France, and in Europe. In France at least 60,000 people die from sepsis every year, out of a total of 300,000 patients. But what happens in intensive care is poorly understood and known. Sepsis accounts for half the cost of intensive care (5% of the hospital budget). 🔥Sepsis is the body's "desperate" response to an infection it considers threatening. All organs fail to a greater or lesser extent. 🔥Sepsis is often very sudden. We go from a banal infection to "something else" without realizing it at first. It's an emergency. Sepsis should not be confined to intensive care, which is often life-saving (20-50% mortality). There is no specific treatment. HEARTS in the Americas is an initiative of countries, led by the Ministries of Health with the participation of local stakeholders with the technical cooperation of Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The Initiative seeks to integrate seamlessly and progressively into already existing health delivery services to promote the adoption of global best practices in the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and improve the performance of the services through better control of high blood pressure and the promotion of secondary prevention with emphasis on the primary health care. HEARTS is being implemented and expanded in 33 countries of the Region to include 4,183 health centers across the Region implementing HEARTS, which together cover approximately 28.7 million adults in the respective catchment areas. Late to my party? Not too late, I hope. A few weeks ago, we proudly launched the much-anticipated 2024 Guidelines for the Management of Cardiovascular diseases. After three years of dedicated effort, countless meetings, thorough data reviews, and meticulous document analysis, we were excited to share a document that not only standardizes cardiovascular care but also serves as a roadmap for delivering quality care at all healthcare system levels. Happy to share the document here. This second edition of CVD guidelines is a testament to the collaborative efforts of esteemed healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders. Developed in partnership with the Kenya Cardiac Society and under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, Kenya, the guidelines embody the collective wisdom, expertise, and dedication of numerous experts committed to advancing cardiovascular health, incorporating the latest advancements in cardiovascular care, tailored to Kenya's unique healthcare landscape. This comprehensive document is a game-changer for cardiovascular care, offering a standardized approach across all health levels—from community level to specialized care—covering both public and private institutions. Our work is, however, far from finished. Top on our agenda is developing a simplified pocketbook, as well as creating protocols and algorithms for managing common cardiovascular conditions, especially at the primary healthcare level. The report highlights the importance of tailored and culturally relevant content, showcasing a shift from traditional text-based information to engaging, video-based storytelling. By addressing the unique needs of South Asian communities, women, and those facing socioeconomic challenges, this study aligns with Scotland’s Heart Disease Action Plan to expand community models of care. We are proud to have contributed to this important research and are excited to share the findings.
