This is a longstanding injustice that has been further entrenched by the Covid-19 pandemic and cost-of-living crisis. These differences in health experiences and outcomes are avoidable, unfair and systematic, and yet they continue to widen." The King's Fund health policy researcher Leila Morris and Senior Fellow Ruth Robertson did a deep dive into people's experiences with the National Health Service in the UK, and identified seven areas for action that could help overcome inequalities and poor outcomes in healthcare, including how to "Tackle racism and discrimination in the NHS and cultivate a culture of compassion." As social enterprises delivering NHS Services, reducing health inequalities is a key objective for many of our UHUK members. The great work done by the Salford Primary Care Together (SPCT) team on their Homeless Inclusion Service has been highlighted in the MIMS Learning platform with a module on tackling health inequalities through inclusion: homelessness. Following the announcement of the UK general election on 4 July, the RCOG reiterates our five calls to action for the next government. Women’s health has historically been left behind with lack of adequate investment in both services and research, meaning missed opportunities to provide the right information, care and support at the right time across a woman’s life course. The RCOG is calling for: 1. The next government to prioritise women’s health and maintain a focus on implementing the Women’s Health Strategy and Women’s Health Hubs in the long term. 2. The next government to significantly improve maternity care by implementing fully funded cross-government policies and programmes to ensure all women receive high-quality, personalised and safe maternity care. 3. The Department for Health and Social Care and NHS England to set up a joint taskforce to address the unique growth in waiting lists in gynaecology. 4. A commitment to parliamentary time for abortion law reform. 5. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to return spending on sexual and reproductive healthcare and rights (SRHR) to pre-cut levels of 5% of the overseas aid budget. A recent report highlights a troubling trend: declining standards in stroke care across the UK 📉 This issue is deeply concerning, as timely and effective treatment can be the difference between recovery and long-term disability - or even life and death - for stroke patients. The Stroke Association is urging immediate action to reverse these declines and ensure that every stroke patient receives the care they deserve. From increased staffing levels to enhanced rehabilitation services, there’s a clear need for systemic improvements. As healthcare professionals, policymakers, and advocates, we all have a role to play in creating a future where high-quality stroke care is accessible to everyone. It's time we prioritise investment in healthcare infrastructure and innovation to restore - and elevate - the standard of care. Harm Reduction programmes, like needle and syringe programmes, contribute significantly to a decrease in HIV and Hepatitis C incidence. 🚨 New resource: ‘Supporting people with ME/CFS in hospital’ In response to increasing requests for advocacy support from people with ME/CFS in hospital, including more severely affected, the 25% M.E. Group, Action for M.E., Blue Ribbon for the Awareness of ME, and the ME Association have co-produced a new resource. It is designed to help patients, carers and family members advocate for their needs, frequently referring to the 2021 NICE guideline for ME/CFS and outlining why people with ME/CFS may need reasonable adjustments, alongside key considerations when treating people with ME/CFS for outpatient and inpatient visits. 🔗 Read more and access the resource: https://ow.ly/eQ1R50S1PQy

Evaluating the PHIRST scheme We launched the first Public Health Intervention Responsive Studies Teams (PHIRST) scheme back in 2020 and we’re now funding eight academic research teams. PHIRST teams rapidly and robustly evaluate interventions put forward by local government organisations in the UK, where such interventions may impact on health or health inequalities. A key driver behind the launch of the PHIRST scheme was a recognition that whilst local government organisations play a vital role in their local communities – with an ability to influence public health – they had not always been able to access the research and evaluation support. We want to discover the difference that the PHIRST scheme is making, whether it’s meeting its goals and if it’s fit for purpose.
