Info

Protecting pollinators – for biodiversity, nutrition and climate adaptation 🐝🌺 Did you know that 75 per cent of the world's food production depends on insect pollination? Pollination is crucial for plants to reproduce, ecosystems to be healthy, and crucial for biodiversity. However, pollinators such as bees are massively threatened by habitat loss, pesticides, diseases, and climate change. To stop their decline, we support measures in Latin America and the Caribbean to protect these vital insects and their ecosystem services. This includes setting up a regional knowledge platform and advising farmers on how to implement pollinator-friendly practices. 🌊 60% of flood protection infrastructure completed as German Embassy and partners visit International Climate Initiative (IKI) Small Grants funded project in Sunamganj’s Haor region 🌧️ Communities in Sunamganj's haor region are gaining relief from flash floods through the "Climate-resilient infrastructure for sustainable community life in the Haor region of Bangladesh" project. 🏗️Flood protection infrastructure, 🌳buffer zone created with local tree species and 🛠️capacity development in Jamalganj and Derai are protecting local communities and crops by reducing flood and erosion impacts. Up to 18,000 people will be reached by the project. This pilot project is executed by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) through three selected partner NGOs: Thengamara Mahila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS), Friends In Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB) , and Padakhep Manabik Unnayan Kendra ✅ Between December 02-05, 2024, a team from GIZ Bangladesh, the German Embassy, PKSF, and Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) reviewed progress and participated in community awareness programmes 📢. These sessions emphasised social and environmental risk management, climate adaptation, and community-led sustainability. This two-year project received funding from IKI Small Grants under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) which supports local actors globally in implementing climate and biodiversity actions aligned with international agreements. IKI Small Grants empowers national funding institutions to manage calls for proposals and implement local projects effectively, while building long-term institutional strength through capacity development. IKI Small Grants is commissioned by Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection(BMUV). GIZ Bangladesh provides technical assistance to PKSF and is responsible for the overall monitoring of the project activities. 🌾Together, these efforts envision greater opportunities for a more climate resilient and sustainable future for the haor communities. 🌍 #Sustainability #FloodProtection #Bangladesh #ClimateResilience #CommunityDevelopment #IKI #IKISmallGrants #HaorRegion #ClimateAction

🌍 Turning Climate Research into Action 🌧️ Extreme weather events are on the rise. Droughts and more intense rainfall are affecting agriculture, forcing people to leave their homes and altering local biodiversity. But what if we could use climate #research to help people adapt to these new conditions? From 2018 to 2024, the #IKI B-EPICC project worked in Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Peru and Tanzania to strengthen resilience to the impacts of #climatechange. Our Himalayas are the lifeline of India's monsoon, which sustains over 40% of the country’s cultivated land. These majestic mountains are also the source of mighty rivers that support billions of lives. Yet, when we talk about protecting and restoring forests, how often do we think about the mountains? Interestingly, nearly 67% of India’s forests are found in mountainous regions. It's time to prioritise their conservation! On #InternationalMountainDay, let's recognise their fragility and pledge to protect these vital ecosystems. By understanding their significance, we can take steps to ensure a sustainable future for both humans and the mountains. 🌟 Transforming Streets for People: Quezon City's Tactical Urbanism 🌟 On December 7, Quezon City launched a redesigned Maginhawa Street as part of the #SPARK Project, to promote sustainable urban mobility through community-driven tactical urbanism. 📍Maginhawa Street turned into a vibrant, people-centered space designed to prioritize active mobility. 🎨Over 150 volunteers helped transform the street with colorful murals, shared pathways, and public spaces crafted from recycled materials, reclaiming the street from cars and prioritizing people. 🚶♀️🚴♂️ The intervention fosters walking and cycling, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport while enhancing public health and equity. Motorized transport contributes 30% of the Philippines' energy-related emissions, making initiatives like this crucial for a greener future. The project will expand to Pasig City in 2025. The SPARK Project is implemented by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) and the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC). This initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMUV) through International Climate Initiative (IKI) Maginhawa Street is now more than a road, it's a hub for community, creativity, and climate-friendly mobility 🚴♀️🌏 ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat Learn more about the SPARK Project: https://lnkd.in/evYa5K6K Learn more about the launch event here: https://lnkd.in/erasnmcp Tu-My Tran ICLEI ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat Quezon City Government Heba Attia Mousa
