The art and food hub that is Maginhawa Street in Quezon City is best experienced on foot—but poor pedestrian infrastructure is limiting visitors and locals alike from fully exploring all that the area has to offer. Last month, visitors came together to help make Maginhawa more vibrant and accessible for all. The citizen-led pedestrianization initiatives encourage walkable, safe, and inclusive public spaces that benefit the whole community. This initiative is part of the Sparking Active Mobility Actions for Climate-Friendly Cities (#SPARK) Project, organized by ICSC and ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat. 🌟 Reimagining Streets for People: Maginhawa Street Sparks Active Mobility! 🚶♀️🚴♂️💚 Quezon City’s newly revitalized #MaginhawaStreet is proof that vibrant, people-centered urban spaces are possible when communities come together! Over 150 volunteers, including local businesses, youth, and advocacy groups, transformed the area with colorful murals, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and shared spaces for cyclists and residents. 🌈👩🎨 This tactical urbanism intervention is part of the SPARK Project, designed to promote active mobility like walking and cycling, reduce emissions, and foster healthier lifestyles. By reclaiming streets from cars, we’re creating safer, greener, and more inclusive cities for everyone. 🌍✨ 🚨 Why it matters: 🌱 Non-motorized transport makes up just 17.8% of trips in QC—we need to increase that! 🚴♀️ Active mobility and public transport can help reduce transport fuel consumption by 25% 🚙 Motorized transport accounts for 30% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions in the Philippines 🛠️ Projects like this prove the power of community-driven solutions in advancing climate-friendly urban planning. Let’s scale up initiatives like this to build a future where cities prioritize people over cars! 🚶♂️🚴♀️ 🔗 Learn more about Maginhawa Street's makeover here: https://lnkd.in/g3XHJWSe #ActiveMobility #SustainableCities #PeopleOverCars #TacticalUrbanism #ClimateAction #InclusiveCities #WalkAndBike #SPARKMaginhawa #CommunityParticipation ICLEI | ICLEI - Sustainable Mobility | Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities
