🌊 60% of flood protection infrastructure completed as German Embassy and partners visit International Climate Initiative (IKI) Small Grants funded project in Sunamganj’s Haor region 🌧️ Communities in Sunamganj's haor region are gaining relief from flash floods through the "Climate-resilient infrastructure for sustainable community life in the Haor region of Bangladesh" project. 🏗️Flood protection infrastructure, 🌳buffer zone created with local tree species and 🛠️capacity development in Jamalganj and Derai are protecting local communities and crops by reducing flood and erosion impacts. Up to 18,000 people will be reached by the project. This pilot project is executed by the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) through three selected partner NGOs: Thengamara Mahila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS), Friends In Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB) , and Padakhep Manabik Unnayan Kendra ✅ Between December 02-05, 2024, a team from GIZ Bangladesh, the German Embassy, PKSF, and Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) reviewed progress and participated in community awareness programmes 📢. These sessions emphasised social and environmental risk management, climate adaptation, and community-led sustainability. This two-year project received funding from IKI Small Grants under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) which supports local actors globally in implementing climate and biodiversity actions aligned with international agreements. IKI Small Grants empowers national funding institutions to manage calls for proposals and implement local projects effectively, while building long-term institutional strength through capacity development. IKI Small Grants is commissioned by Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection(BMUV). GIZ Bangladesh provides technical assistance to PKSF and is responsible for the overall monitoring of the project activities. 🌾Together, these efforts envision greater opportunities for a more climate resilient and sustainable future for the haor communities. 🌍 #Sustainability #FloodProtection #Bangladesh #ClimateResilience #CommunityDevelopment #IKI #IKISmallGrants #HaorRegion #ClimateAction

🌍 Driving Urban Sustainability in Bangladesh 📅 Dhaka, 12 December 2024 — Today marked the First National Dialogue on Urban Environmental Management, a milestone event uniting key stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, and youth groups to tackle urban environmental challenges. This event is organised by the Liveable and Inclusive Cities for All (LICA) project, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration. The project is implemented by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives (MoLGRD&C) and GIZ Bangladesh. 💡 The dialogue emphasised policy recommendations and innovative solutions for sustainable and inclusive urban environments. Notable discussions explored themes such as waste management, waterbody conservation, and creating public space. 🎤 The Chief Guest, Mr. Gopal Krishna Debnath, Chief Engineer of LGED, stressed: “Urban environmental challenges are too vast for any sector to solve alone. Effective collaboration is key to building climate-resilient cities.” 📖 The keynote presented by Mr. Anisur Rahman from GFA focused on how national guidelines can elevate living standards, with thematic sessions showcasing actionable city-level insights. Speakers from Rajshahi and Narayanganj City Corporation, Kushtia Municipality, BRAC, Water Aid, ICLEI, SNV, IUCN, and BUET underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to enhance urban livability and sustainability. 🌱 This event reaffirmed a shared commitment to healthier, climate-sensitive cities and highlighted the transformative potential of collective efforts. The LICA project, launched in November 2022, continues to strengthen local capacities for urban environmental management. 🌍✨ A Path to More Inclusion: Empowering Every Ability ✨🌍 Persons with disabilities continue to face systemic barriers—stigmatizing attitudes, inaccessible infrastructure, and inequities that exacerbate their disadvantages. Especially women with disabilities are up to four times more likely to experience violence than those without. 🌈 Andreas Kuck, Country Director of GIZ Bangladesh, alongside Brigadier General (R.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain, Advisor, Ministry of Labour and Employment highlighted this aspect yesterday at the “Empower Ability: Power Every Ability”, organised by Bangladesh Business & Disability Network and supported by GIZ, ILO and BRAC Bank PLC. Germany’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to leave no one behind drives its cross-sectoral approach to disability inclusion through policy, dialogue, and targeted measures, with an intersectional lens at its core. 🌐 As host of the 3rd Global Disability Summit (GDS) in Berlin, April 2025, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is working to bridge gaps between development cooperation and inclusion. Preparations include the Asian Disability Summit in Bangkok coming February. In Bangladesh, GIZ already works to: 👌 mobilise women with disabilities for skills development, promoting gender-transformative teaching tools, and strengthening employability 💪 👌 support displaced persons with disabilities in accessing public services and economic opportunities in climate-affected and urbanized regions like Khulna and Rajshahi 🌱and 👌 ensure through the Employment Injury Scheme Pilot (EIS) compensation for workers in the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector who experience permanent disabilities, while establishing Return-to-Work (RTW) programmes in partnership with BBDN. 🌟 By prioritising disability inclusion, we can create a world that is not only more equitable but also more adaptable #Inclusion #DisabilityRights #SustainableDevelopment #Empowerment #LeaveNoOneBehind #GDS2025 #BMZ
