Calix Limited congratulates BlueScope, BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy, the WA government, and all associated parties of Project #Neosmelt on the announcement of the location of the Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) pilot plant in Kwinana, WA. The ESF pilot plant aims to demonstrate an important pathway to near-zero emissions steelmaking using Pilbara iron ores by further processing green iron to remove impurities and make it ready for consumption in low-carbon steelmaking. #ZESTY – an Australian hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) technology – is highly complementary to ESF processing. It aims to provide a leading solution to produce green iron from Pilbara ores and enable multiple pathways to low-carbon steelmaking. This includes further processing in an ESF, direct substitution of green iron into a blast furnace, and direct feed to Electric Arc Furnaces. To learn more about ZESTY's H-DRI technology and pathways to green iron and steel, visit: https://lnkd.in/g3aunnSv #iron #steel #DRI #HBI #decarbonisation #netzero
Australia’s two largest iron ore miners BHP and Rio Tinto, along with BlueScope, have selected the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth Western Australia as the location to develop Australia’s largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace (ESF) pilot plant—Project NeoSmelt. The NeoSmelt parties also announced that Woodside Energy will join the consortium as an equal equity participant and energy supplier, subject to finalising commercial arrangements. The pilot plant will initially use natural gas to reduce iron ore to direct reduced iron (DRI), but once operational, the project aims to use lower-carbon emissions hydrogen to reduce iron ore. If successful, NeoSmelt has the potential to open a pathway to near-zero emissions steelmaking using Pilbara iron ore and ensure the longevity of Australia's iron ore industry. Watch a video below with details of the announcement from Tania Archibald (Chief Executive, Australian Steel Products), made at a press conference today on-site in Kwinana. We’re proud to share that Heirloom, Leilac’s exclusive Direct Air Capture (DAC) partner, has successfully raised US$150 million in Series B funding! This milestone reflects growing confidence in scalable solutions for carbon removal and their critical role in combating climate change. Heirloom's DAC process uses limestone as a sponge for atmospheric carbon dioxide. Leilac’s innovative electric calcination technology provides the critical heating and separation step to efficiently remove pure CO2 from this sponge. Together with Heirloom, we’re working on groundbreaking projects in the United States, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the State of Louisiana to pave the way for gigatonne-scale carbon dioxide removal. Heirloom CEO, Shashank Samala highlighted: "Heirloom's Direct Air Capture scales based on its ability to become incredibly low cost. Our unique approach uses limestone, a naturally occurring cheap mineral, as a sponge for CO2 which is handled by smart robots. Leilac units then efficiently separate the clean CO2 from the sponge. This unique system sets us up to become the lowest cost DAC solution. Together with Leilac we are working towards address legacy and unavoidable CO2 emissions". As the need for #decarbonisation grows, collaborations like ours demonstrate how industry-leading technologies can support a sustainable future. Calix Limited congratulates its partner Heirloom on the successful completion of a US$150 million Series B funding round. Calix’s subsidiary, Leilac, has previously signed a global and perpetual exclusive licence agreement for its technology to be used in all Heirloom DAC facilities. Leilac CEO, Daniel Rennie said, "We congratulate our partner Heirloom on this significant milestone, and look forward to continuing our successful collaboration. Our complementary technologies provide unique combined potential to efficiently absorb and then capture atmospheric carbon dioxide using limestone. We continue to rapidly deploy and scale our solution in the pursuit of carbon dioxide removal at the gigatonne scale. “The successful raise shows confidence from a broad range of sophisticated investors in the technology and the supportive emerging market and regulatory environment, and a conviction to invest in great technology solutions to critically important climate challenges.” Calix Limited CEO & MD, Phil Hodgson added, "The successful funding round represents a further proof-point of Calix’s strategy. We continue to rigorously focus on capital-light deployment of our technology to the most prospective target markets through strategic partnerships and immediate revenue generating opportunities." It was a pleasure to recently welcome a Danish CCUS delegation at the Calix Technology Centre in Victoria, Australia. Denmark is among the countries leading the way in CO2 use and sequestration, and is set to be an important hub to manage industrial carbon emissions in Europe. The visit provided an opportunity to discuss innovation in carbon capture, electrification of heavy industry, industrial carbon management, and explore opportunities for collaboration. #CCUS #cement #lime #DAC #CDR #netzero
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation of CCUS leaders from Denmark to Australia. They visited our parent company Calix Limited's Technology Centre in Bacchus Marsh, Australia to exchange knowledge and gain insight into the groundbreaking technologies driving decarbonisation efforts. #Denmark is rapidly emerging as a global leader in CCUS, with innovative projects driven by onshore and offshore geological storage potential, plentiful renewable energy supply, and strong policy support. Like Leilac and Calix Limited , the delegation is focused on solving hard-to-abate climate challenges in the industrial sectors. The visit provided the opportunity to show Leilac’s innovative #decarbonisation technology designed to address the unavoidable emissions from cement and lime, as well as remove excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The visit also underscored the immense potential for collaboration. Denmark has the potential to help safely store unavoidable industrial carbon emissions from across Europe. And to realise our global climate goals, innovation and knowledge sharing across the carbon value chain will be needed to forge new pathways for scalable and energy-efficient decarbonisation. Together, we can drive meaningful change by sharing expertise, ideas, and a commitment to a sustainable future. Let’s continue to forge global partnerships that bring us closer to net zero.
