Calix Limited congratulates BlueScope, BHP, Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy, the WA government, and all associated parties of Project #Neosmelt on the announcement of the location of the Electric Smelting Furnace (ESF) pilot plant in Kwinana, WA. The ESF pilot plant aims to demonstrate an important pathway to near-zero emissions steelmaking using Pilbara iron ores by further processing green iron to remove impurities and make it ready for consumption in low-carbon steelmaking. #ZESTY – an Australian hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) technology – is highly complementary to ESF processing. It aims to provide a leading solution to produce green iron from Pilbara ores and enable multiple pathways to low-carbon steelmaking. This includes further processing in an ESF, direct substitution of green iron into a blast furnace, and direct feed to Electric Arc Furnaces. Australia’s two largest iron ore miners BHP and Rio Tinto, along with BlueScope, have selected the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth Western Australia as the location to develop Australia’s largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace (ESF) pilot plant—Project NeoSmelt. The NeoSmelt parties also announced that Woodside Energy will join the consortium as an equal equity participant and energy supplier, subject to finalising commercial arrangements. The pilot plant will initially use natural gas to reduce iron ore to direct reduced iron (DRI), but once operational, the project aims to use lower-carbon emissions hydrogen to reduce iron ore. If successful, NeoSmelt has the potential to open a pathway to near-zero emissions steelmaking using Pilbara iron ore and ensure the longevity of Australia's iron ore industry. Watch a video below with details of the announcement from Tania Archibald (Chief Executive, Australian Steel Products), made at a press conference today on-site in Kwinana.
