📣 The Australian Federal Government has today awarded Australian clean tech MCi Carbon a $14.5m Carbon Capture Technologies Program (CCTP) grant 💰 The Myrtle+ Project aims to progress Australia's lead in permanent Carbon Capture & Utilisation (CCU) technology. It will capture and transform CO₂ from hard-to-abate industries into carbon embodied materials for use in buildings and construction, creating new industries and jobs in the circular carbon economy. The fund will progress plant upgrades to MCi Carbon’s Myrtle CCU facility to expand and optimise processing capabilities for a broader range of feedstock materials, further supporting decarbonisation efforts. 🏗 Myrtle, which is currently in late-stage construction on Kooragang Island in Newcastle, will capture and transform more than 1000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and create up to 5,000 tonnes of new materials. The project brings MCi Carbon’s CCU technology closer to market, significantly advancing both Australian and global customer engagements, ultimately accelerating its mission to lock away millions of tonnes of CO₂ into materials and helping the world achieve a net zero future. Unlocking the value of carbon by transforming emissions into valuable materials for the circular economy.
About us
MCi Carbon (MCi) is a world-leading and award-winning Australian clean technology transforming carbon dioxide (CO2) into building products and materials for the circular carbon economy. Based in Canberra, MCi Carbon has a technical headquarters in Newcastle, a global reference pilot plant at the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER) and will soon be building one of the world's first mineral carbonation demonstration plants at Orica's Kooragang Island manufacturing site, operational in 2024. Founded in 2013, MCi’s proprietary mineral carbonation technology is a low-cost, low-pressure, low-energy chemical engineering process to transform CO2 emissions from industrial sources into solid materials for use in a range of products. MCi has received local and international recognition for its R&D, recently awarded the Circular Transition Award at the 34th National Banksia Sustainability Awards and the NSW Clean Technology Award. In 2021, MCi won first prize at the Clean Energy Start-up Pitch Battle at COP26 in Glasgow. Other global accolades include the 2018 Resource Innovator of the Year Award at the New Materials Summit in Berlin and being featured at the World Economic Forum Pioneers of Change Summit, building momentum as a global brand and a leader in carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Recently featured in Bloomberg, Forbes, and the Australian Financial Review, MCi CEO Marcus Dawe and COO Sophia Hamblin Wang were named in the Top 100 Australian Green Power Players, published in The Australian. To our shareholders, investors, customer and advocates. Thank you for your support. The company is at a critical point where innovation and action converge, positioning us as leaders in the global clean technology landscape. This has been a defining year, marking not just technical breakthroughs but recognition on the international stage as we actively contribute to the net zero transformation. With our pioneering mineral carbonation technology, our team has spent a decade preparing for the emerging market for carbon solutions. This year, we have seen industries evaluating these pathways, understanding that decarbonisation does not have to come at the cost of growth but can be the most efficient and least disruptive way forward. Our greatest asset is our people. Throughout 2024, we continued to invest in our team, growing to nearly 60 employees by the end of the year. Our success is a direct result of their dedication, expertise, and commitment to innovation. Every milestone the company achieved this year—from scaling our technology to deepening global partnerships—has been made possible by our talented workforce. Maintaining focus, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of deep engagement with our customers as we remain on mission and continue to scale-up our technology platform in Australia and overseas. Yesterday, the Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) and Beyond Zero Emissions, together with prominent Hunter businesses and peak bodies, released a joint statement at the Energy Renaissance Renaissance One gigafactory in the #Hunter Valley calling on the Federal Parliament to commit to a strong 2035 #emissions reduction target. The Hunter is a key regional centre for #cleantech #manufacturing and #renewableenergy and has the skills and knowledge to make our clean energy future in Australia. An Australian #battery manufacturing industry could create over 44,000 jobs and $57 billion in GDP in 2035 nationwide (https://lnkd.in/evHNh8PP). MCi Carbon welcomes the release of Australia’s Circular Economy Framework from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW). This ambitious national plan sets a bold agenda to double the country’s circularity by 2035! We're proud to stand alongside government, industry, and research leaders like CSIRO to transform CO₂ emissions and industrial by-products, like steel slag and mine tailings, into valuable, long-lasting materials. The framework’s priorities - from reducing our material footprint and lifting materials productivity, to scaling resource recovery and advancing sustainable construction - resonate closely with our mission to embed innovative carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies into the heart of Australia’s circular future. This comprehensive roadmap underscores: - sustainable material innovation - high-value recycled products, especially in the built environment - ESG alignment for investors and businesses - advanced recovery, green chemistry, and collaborative supply chain models These policies and targets promise to drive new growth, resilience, and export opportunities in a lower-carbon world. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #CarbonUtilisation #ClimateSolutions #Innovation #LowCarbon #MaterialScience #GreenConstruction #ESG #Australia
