Carbon capture technologies are important for our industry but are often associated with high levels of investment. This makes it all the more exciting that Heidelberg Materials UK is launching a new carbon capture trial at our Ketton cement plant in Rutland as part of C-Capture Ltd., Leeds's national XLR8 CCS project. The aim is to demonstrate that cost-effective carbon capture solutions can indeed be utilised in hard-to-abate industries. The cutting-edge initiative utilises an innovative solvent-based technology that not only captures CO2 but also reduces energy consumption by an impressive 40%.

With H₂ to CO₂-free aluminium 🌍 Hydro is taking an important step towards zero-carbon aluminium by testing green hydrogen technology 💧 at its Høyanger plant in Norway. In a three-year industrial-scale pilot project, Hydro will replace liquid natural gas with green hydrogen in the recycling of 100% post-consumer aluminium scrap ♻️. The project aims to demonstrate the potential of green hydrogen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels in the energy-intensive aluminium remelting process. The pilot project will focus on powering a remelting furnace with green hydrogen and will provide key insights into the technology's impact on fuel switching, metal quality and the infrastructure needed for wider adoption 🌱. Hydro's broader strategy includes pioneering new technologies and processes to reduce carbon emissions, such as near zero carbon aluminium production, testing carbon capture 🌿 and exploring alternative fuels such as biomethane and plasma technology. The ShipFC has reached a major #milestone, as the Norwegian Maritime Authority confirms the #feasibility of the #ammonia fuel system design for the Eidesvik-owned platform supply vessel, Viking Energy. Through the EU-funded ShipFC project, the project partners aim to retrofit the platform supply vessel Viking Energy with an ammonia fuel system and a large 2MW solid oxide fuel cell system. This will allow it to sail long distances without emission of #greenhousegases, demonstrating that long-range #zerocarbon emission voyages with high power on larger ships are possible.
