AI Adoption Beats in Latam companies | Volume #2 The Age of AI is about 18 months old. Hundreds of $ billions have been invested in laying down the infrastructure needed to support this AI revolution – from Data Centers (GPUs) to more capable LLMs to Enterprise applications (AI Agents). And now businesses are beginning to bring these tools – such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Co-Pilot – to their workforce. From the media hype and the number of times CEOs mention AI in their earnings calls and investor days, you would think the average knowledge worker is using AI every day of an efficient and productive way. The truth: A very small group of knowledge workers is using AI every day. An even smaller group is using it effectively. And that means very few organizations are seeing ROI on their workforce AI investments. According to recent “AI Proficiency Report” by Section, only 7% of employees are in the “AI Leaders” class. These are people who have experimented with various LLMs, learned how to prompt, and integrated AI into their operations and workflows. In comparison, nearly 60% are “AI Newcomers” – people who have played around with ChatGPT a few times, but haven’t committed to it or learned to use it well. If your company is 60% of “AI Newcomers”, you have no idea (yet) what AI can do to transform your workforce. Pharma Moderna boasts an 80% AI employee adoption rate – suggesting that they are seeing significant productivity gains across their 6,000 person workforce. But they are the exception in 2024. Most companies won’t see the efficiencies they hope for with a small AI working group of superusers. So where should you start? The 82% of employees who are “AI Newcomers” or “AI Experimenters” are open-minded, but they need help. 60% of the “AI Leaders” are saving between 10% and 30% of their time each week with AI because they’re using it as more than a content creator. That’s 12+ hours (per week) ripe for more creative, strategic, and analytical thinking. So what’s stopping the 93% of other employees from doing the same?. What AI Leaders’ companies do differently? 1. Their company approves of AI (and says so publicly) AI Leaders members are more likely to be working in companies that have a clear AI policy that is in favor of AI use. 2. Their company has deployed AI training and paid for it The AI Leaders Class is the most likely to be receiving company support, largely in the form of AI training, from their employer. 3. Their company has deployed an LLM 77% of companies have not deployed company- or team-wide LLMs — but the largest segment of people who have access to one are in the AI Leaders Class (39%). Opinions still vary with some pointing to failed AI tools and others seeing AI as a panacea. The reality is somewhere in the middle. In my opinion, AI’s greatest promise is to augment (not replace) human cognitive and operative capacity. And we are definitely seeing AI’s game-changing effect in healthcare. During #D24 just last week, I heard firsthand reports of physician satisfaction and reduced burden as a result of implementing DAX co-pilot, consistent with a favorable response to ambient AI scribes reported by NEJM earlier this year. While work on insuring accuracy, relevance, and measurable outcomes must continue, healthcare organizations will benefit from learning about ways in which AI is already making impact in the industry. #healthcare #AI #responsibleAI

In 1933, the Montevideo Convention established a clear framework for what defines a country. According to this convention, a state must meet four criteria: 1️⃣ Permanent Population: A country must have people who live there consistently. 2️⃣ Defined Territory: It needs clear borders and recognized land. 3️⃣ Government: There must be an organized political system in place. 4️⃣ Capacity to Enter into Relations with Other States: The ability to engage in diplomatic and international relationships is crucial. These criteria have guided our understanding of nationhood for nearly a century. However, in today's rapidly evolving digital world, we're beginning to see the emergence of new, unconventional forms of communities and countries. One such example is a digital country. A digital country aims to transcend physical borders, uniting citizens globally through shared values, interests, and digital engagement. It raises an intriguing question: Can a digital country ever be considered a "country" by the Montevideo Convention's traditional standards? ➡ Permanent Population: While a digital country's citizens are not bound by geography, they form a consistent and engaged community online. ➡ Defined Territory: Unlike traditional states, a digital country's "territory" exists in the digital realm, challenging the notion that land is a necessary component of nationhood. ➡ Government: A digital country can have an organized leadership and governance structure, albeit in a decentralized and digital format. ➡ Capacity to Enter into Relations with Other States: This digital country can and does engage with traditional states and international organizations, advocating for its citizens and promoting its mission. As we move further into the digital age, it's worth considering whether our traditional definitions of nationhood can or should evolve. Digital communities might not fit the Montevideo Convention's criteria perfectly, but they offer a compelling vision of what the future of countries might look like. What are your thoughts? My Farewell to BBVA: A call for banks to embrace human-centered values. BBVA, a Spanish bank known for its top-ranked user experience design, left me feeling anything but valued as a customer. While their app and interface are undeniably intuitive, their service and business strategy approach lacks a crucial element: humanization. This all started with a surprise €40 quarterly maintenance fee on my very first account with them, opened back in 1998 (a detail that highlights my long-standing loyalty). Determined to understand the fee, I visited a branch and met with the manager. While helpful, the manager exhibited a typical "bank manager" demeanour. Imagine someone typing while talking, eyes flitting towards the door, and radiating an air of self-importance. He explained three ways to avoid the fee: 1- Monthly account deposits (easy) 2- Five bills paid through the account per quarter (feasible) 3- Holding a BBVA product (mortgage, pension plan, or credit card) with a €200 minimum quarterly spend. (impossible) Here's where it went sour. When I expressed my disinterest in additional products, especially a credit card (I'm a responsible spender), the manager became defensive. My preference for debit cards and debt-free living was met with a "why?" and a perceived lack of understanding. Ethics and empathy: Missing ingredients This is where the disconnect lies. BBVA's approach felt manipulative and unethical. Forcing customers into additional product usage to avoid fees goes against human-centered values. My loyalty and financial responsibility shouldn't be penalized. Shouldn't a bank cater to different financial lifestyles? It felt like a forced choice, not a genuine attempt to offer solutions. Beyond the Interface. Bye bye BBVA I closed my account despite loving their user interface. Great UX is just one piece of the puzzle. Companies with strong humanized experiences demonstrate empathy, respect, and alignment with human values. The Takeaway This experience highlights the importance of human-centered strategy that goes beyond interfaces and truly values the customer. The Era of Service emphasizes customer-centricity, transparency, and building trust. BBVA's focus on product sales and a seemingly impersonal approach in their physical branches could be hindering their success in this evolving landscape. Here are some ways BBVA could adapt: - Train staff to prioritize customer needs and offer personalized solutions. - Review fee structures to provide more options that don't require additional product purchases. - Integrate user experience (UX) principles beyond the digital realm, fostering a humanized experience across all touchpoints.
