About us
SARIMA is an organisation that brings together Research and Innovation Management practitioners, to strengthen these disciplines and institutional capabilities across the SADC region. It operates at an individual, institutional, national and international level, as well as across the continuum from research – where new knowledge that can drive innovation is created- through to innovation – which takes new knowledge and translates it into spin offs, products and services. It has anchored itself as a key role player within the SADC regional system of research and innovation (R&I), providing thought leadership and advocacy, a platform for the promotion and facilitation of best practices, and championing efforts to build and strengthen capacity & capabilities, within institutions and for individual practitioners. To ensure that capabilities are sustained through attracting and retaining the specialist skill set required to support R&I, SARIMA plays a pivotal role in professional development, and international structures that award professional status in these disciplines. The required capabilities and skill sets are critical to supporting world leading research endeavours, and realisation of sustainable innovations from such research, so as to address societal needs.

The Building it Forward for Research (Management) Leadership in Southern Africa project aims to strengthen Research Support Offices (RSOs) in Public Research Universities in Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa in order for these institutions to more effectively and efficiently support and enable impactful research, and in so doing become more visible and attractive to external donor funders. The project was well-represented at the SARIMA Annual Conference and various side events. Mozambique Stakeholder Engagement Workshop A Mozambique Stakeholder Engagement Workshop was convened on 2 September at the AFECC Gloria Hotel, bringing together key actors from the Mozambican research and innovation ecosystem, with representatives of the SARIMA project team, the Project Steering Committee (PSC), and the funder’s Program Officer. The aim of the workshop was to explore how the project outcomes can be sustained beyond the project term, and how the project can be scaled moving forward, to ensure a broader impact in Mozambique. The scene was set with an overview of the Mozambican research and innovation ecosystem, highlighting the recently approved Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy and its Implementation Strategy. Discussion topics covered issues such as language (which can be both a barrier but also a resource), skills and capacity, knowledge transfer, and the importance of demonstrating impact and maintaining momentum. Wide support was expressed for continuing the project and expanding its reach. Riding on the momentum of the Cape Town Technology Transfer Week, ATTP Council held its once-a-year hybrid meeting right after members' participation at the AUTM-WIPO International K/TT Summit. While time is always scarce in an international event of this scale with focused discussion of diverse topics of innovation and tech transfer, the ATTP council made some important milestone decisions that will make the Alliance more agile in building up a glocal community of practice for existing and future RTTPs. For like-minded peer tech transfer associations interested in joining the ATTP, a new associate member category will be created to those organizations who are ready, willing but requires some further planning to develop their capacity building capability. Additional information will be coming soon. The Alliance is grateful to Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA) for availing ATTP the opportunity as a co-organizer of this meaningful week, and wish our exchange will leave long lasting foot prints for the tech transfer communities in Africa and beyond.
