Kyla Raoult, a recent master’s degree graduate in Polymer Science, has developed an innovative, on-demand hydrogel that could offer men a safer, reversible, and non-hormonal contraceptive option. This soft, jelly-like material forms a barrier in the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm) to block sperm, while still allowing seminal fluid to pass. The best part? It’s completely reversible with a simple injection. While still in its developmental stages, Raoult’s groundbreaking work could provide a much-needed alternative to traditional methods, offering men a less invasive and hormone-free solution to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Last week at the #SFSA2024 I had the honour of facilitating a panel discussion on "Managing intellectual property (IP) in cross-border research collaborations". The panellists, Dikabo Mogopodi Jetane Charsley and Oabona Enock Nthebolang, brought a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter, and I am deeply grateful to them for their insights and the engaging dialogue we had. This session was not only enriching for the audience but also for me personally. One key takeaway that resonated with me is that the groundwork for addressing IP challenges has been laid through gap analysis. What stood out most was the collective commitment from all stakeholders- researchers, institutions, and policymakers- to ensure that there is a shared understanding of IP. From inception to commercialisation, the goal is clear: to collaborate effectively and ensure equitable benefits for all involved. A heartfelt thank you to the panellists and everyone who contributed to making this session a success. The past 2 weeks renowned Intellectual Property experts from WIPO, academia, and industry delivered lectures on various IP topics, including international and regional patent systems, trademarks, copyright licensing, IP enforcement, and IP management and valuation. The WIPO-SA Summer School 2024 happened in Durban (25 November to 6 December 2024). This annual workshop, organized by the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) through National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), in collaboration with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), the Japan Patent Office, and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), provided a fantastic opportunity for university students and young professionals to deepen their knowledge of intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer. The WIPO SA Summer School teaches young people about the management of intellectual property and technology transfer. The program consists of lectures, case studies, simulation exercises, and group discussions on specific intellectual property concerns. It is intended for those who are already familiar with IP and have completed the WIPO Distance Learning Course on Intellectual Property Management (DL 450). Engaging with young professionals from different parts of the world in such a dynamic and immersive environment significantly enriched both my personal and professional development. What an experience.. Another experience was to witness learners from various schools around Durban, such as Mthwalume High School, Velabahleke High School, Ndukwenhle High School, Inanda Comprehensive High School and Nombika Secondary School given the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas/products. Watching young minds presenting and showcasing their innovative ideas and how this initiative encourages young minds to engage with IP and technology transfer from an early age, fostering creativity and innovation was heartwarming.

Empowering Youth in Tech: DSIT/EPF Tech Fund Venture Building Programme The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation in partnership with EPF Tech Fund is launching a Venture Building Programme to support 20 youth startups leveraging 4IR technologies to solve pressing South African challenges. Selected startups will gain access to mentorship, resources, and funding to scale their innovations and align with national goals such as poverty alleviation, job creation, and renewable energy growth.
