Last week at the #SFSA2024 I had the honour of facilitating a panel discussion on "Managing intellectual property (IP) in cross-border research collaborations". The panellists, Dikabo Mogopodi Jetane Charsley and Oabona Enock Nthebolang, brought a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter, and I am deeply grateful to them for their insights and the engaging dialogue we had. This session was not only enriching for the audience but also for me personally. One key takeaway that resonated with me is that the groundwork for addressing IP challenges has been laid through gap analysis. What stood out most was the collective commitment from all stakeholders- researchers, institutions, and policymakers- to ensure that there is a shared understanding of IP. From inception to commercialisation, the goal is clear: to collaborate effectively and ensure equitable benefits for all involved.
