COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Many high school students will say that studying government is boring or uninteresting. Government
and politics can be exciting subjects. People may even fight and die for political beliefs. Government
has to do with events that occur in the world from rising unemployment to elections, conflicts in the
Middle East, and education. Government addresses the most basic issues in our lives such as the quality
of our food, personal safety, and the right to voice opinions about our leaders. As students prepare to
leave high school, they must be prepared to participate in the world as active and informed citizens.
Course requirements
American Government is a yearlong class. Passing American Government is a requirement for
graduation in Douglas County and the state of Georgia.

Students MUST come prepared for class each day and the following items are essential for students to
remain organized and be successful in class.
● Large three ring binder with at least 3 dividers (sections: Terms, Notes, other)
● Colored pencils, pens, highlighters, etc.

GRADING POLICY:
Douglas County Schools has provided guidelines for the grading practices to be used in all high school
classes. These guidelines are located at the following link: DCSS Grading Guidelines 22-23

Grading Scale

Grades shall be calculated on assignments, tests, and projects in the following method:

A 90-105

B 80-89

C 71-79

D 70

F Below 70
Weight of Grades

All grades can be categorized into two groups, summative and formative. All grades should be academic
and relevant to the course.

Summative Grades

● Summative grades will comprise approximately 50% of the 36-week average or


18-week average for 4x4 in all high school credit courses*
● Summative categories or grades could include but are not limited to:
Examinations/Tests, Projects, Labs, Term Papers, Compositions, Benchmarks,
Quarterly Assessments, Quizzes, midterms, and other similar assignments.

Formative Grades

● Formative grades will comprise approximately 30% of the 36-week average or


18-week average for 4x4 in all high school credit courses*
● Formative grades could include but are not limited to Class Work, Notebooks, Labs,
Quizzes, Homework, and other similar assignments.

EOC
● Midterm/Final exams will count 20% of the 18-week average for 4x4
● Non Midterm/Final Exam/Quarterly Assessments courses – culminating projects,
or final exams will count no more than 20% of the 18-week average for 4x4.

Below you will find clarity for specific grading guidelines that are granted teacher discretion.
● Late Work Policy - 10 points per day late. After 5 days late the maximum you can receive is a
50%
● Make-Up Opportunities - For everyday absent you have 1 day to make up the work.
● Grade Improvement / Extra Credit Opportunities & Limits - At the teacher’s discretion.

** Homework will be given regularly with the expectation that students will complete the assignments
within the time provided. Although it may not be individually recorded in the gradebook as a
stand-alone assignment, it will be used to develop other assessment items / contribute to packet grade
that will be recorded. **
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY:
Douglas County Schools defines Academic Dishonesty as - receiving or providing unauthorized
assistance on classroom projects, assignments or exams (Student Handbook 2021-2022). Violations of
this policy may result in administrative and academic consequences according to the descriptors below
and using the administrative discipline matrix:
● Classroom Level Intervention - Teacher’s discretion will be used to determine the infraction
severity. At this level, the teacher will assign a grade of 50 until the student adequately
completes the assignment according to the teacher’s specifications. Then, a replacement grade
will be awarded.
● Level 1 - Intentional receiving or providing of unauthorized assistance on classroom projects,
assessments and assignments. May include but is not limited to failure to cite sources.
● Level 2 - Intentional plagiarism or cheating on a minor classroom assignment or project
Intentional plagiarism or cheating on a minor classroom assignment or project. Includes but is
not limited to Intentional dishonesty on minor classroom projects, assignments, homework, etc.
● Level 3 - Intentional plagiarism or cheating on a major exam, statewide assessment or project or
the falsification of school records (including forgery). Includes but is not limited to cheating on
major exams, statewide assessments or other state mandated academic work; Includes the
falsification of school records; forgery; Level 3 may be used for students that violate the school
policy on academic dishonesty three or more times during the same school year.

GRADING SCALE:
A - 100-90%
B - 89-80%
C - 79-71%
D – 70%
F - 69-Below

INFINITE CAMPUS PARENT PORTAL ACCESS TO GRADES:

It is strongly encouraged that parents and students regularly monitor student academic progress through
the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Parents should contact the Main Office (770.651.6000) in order to
obtain their access information.
EXTRA HELP / TUTORIAL: Students may receive help from any teacher in the PLC based on what
is most convenient or desired. It is sometimes helpful to get information from a different source. The
PLC Tutorial Schedule is listed below:

Second Semester. American Government Curriculum Map *Dates are subject to change.*

Rules and Expectations


1. Do not do ANYTHING that would detract from the learning environment, this is a
LEARNING environment first and foremost. Follow this one simple rule and you will
learn a lot and enjoy the class. There is zero tolerance for any action(s) that would
diminish the chances for learning to take place for yourself or your peers.
2. DO NOT TALK WHEN THE TEACHER IS TALKING (#1 pet peeve) don’t interrupt
anyone else when they are talking.
3. Follow the rules of Alexander High School
4. Be prepared!! Bring your materials with you as well as any assignments that are due.
5. Be RESPECTFUL of the teacher, other students, and yourself.
6. Follow the rules set forth in the student handbook, and the online code of conduct
7. Cell Phones, headphones, laptops/chromebooks are to be put in your backpack and away
during class, unless otherwise permitted by the teacher. If your phone is out you will
receive the following in order of violation:
a. Verbal Warning
b. Phone will be taken by the teacher and returned upon the end of class
c. Email home to parent and a detention issued
d. Formal Write up
You are in school and here to learn. You are not here to watch tic tok, YouTube, Netflix,
Disney+, Sponge Bob, or listen to music.

and have read it carefully. I/We agree to follow all the policies and procedures outlined in this
handbook. I also understand that these policies may be changed or eliminated at any time by the Douglas
County School Board or the Alexander High School Administration. Parents and students will be
notified of such changes to this agreement.
