BASKETBALL Introduction
Basketball- is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to
score a point against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet high hoop
under organized rules
Brief History
 Dr. James Naismith- invented basketball in Dec., 1891 in Springfield
Massachusetts
 Nailed two peach baskets at the walls of YMCA gymnasium and served as
first goal.
 It can be played indoors or outdoors
 1934-the major breakthrough of the game
 Became regular Olympic in 1936
Facilities and Equipment
 Playing court- 28 meters in length and 15 meters in width
 Ball- orange with traditionally shaped panels and black seems. 74. 9-78cm
in circumference; 567-650g in weight

Players and Substitute
1. Point guard: usually the fastest player on the team, organizes the team’s
offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right
player at the right time.
2. Shooting guard: often the team’s best shooter.
3. Small forward: usually plays in the area from the end line to the free throw
lane.
4. Power forward: expected to be good middle- and long-distance shooter and
to score baskets from penetration
5. Center: good rebounder and scorer can dominate the game
