I. Rationale

Ointments are a form of topical medication, usually made of a solution of oil

and water. They are many different kinds of ointments with various medical
purposes, for example, Fluocinonide is an ointment that is used to treat the itching,
redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort of various skin
conditions, including psoriasis (a skin disease in which red, scaly patches form on
some areas of the body and eczema (a skin disease that causes the skin to be dry
and itchy and to sometimes develop red, scaly rashes).[1]

Currently many of these ointments are made using material taken from
expensive plants such as Extracts of Aloe vera whole plant, Eucalyptus
globulus leaves, Ficus infectoria bark, Ficus religiosa bark and Piper
[2]
betel leaves. These plants do not grow naturally in certain parts of the world and
often the cost of production for these plants is very expensive. The cost of starting
a small sized Eucalyptus farm with a subpar profit return is around 2228 US
dollars.[3] This, however, does not cover the cost of things like shipping of the
Eucalyptus leaves and assumes that the soil the farm is working with has the
proper pH levels so often the cost of starting a farm will exceed these prices. Since
these herbs are so expensive, often the price of the medicine which uses these
herbs is expensive also. This means that consumers who need these ointments for
various medical reasons may not be able to purchase them do to their financial
situation so they will most likely continue to suffer.

There is, however, an alternative. A commonly growing plant in most areas of

the world. Moringa oleifera (Malunggay), often referred to as the “Miracle Tree”,
contains a great profile of important vitamins, minerals, and serves as a good
source of protein, β-carotene, amino acids and various antioxidant phenolic
molecules. Moringa consists of a rich and rare combination of zeatin, quercetin, β-
sitosterol, caffeoylquinic acid and kaempferol.[4] It also grows in areas that have a
high poverty rates like the Philippines, India, and countries in Africa.[5] This means
that these products will be easier to produce locally and less costly to ship to
different areas with consumers, meaning that the price of the product itself will be
cheaper compared to conventional ointments.

II. Statement of the problem

This study aims to use Malunggay based ointments as an alternative to
conventional ointments. Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What medical benefits can Malunggay offer?

2. Why do these benefits occour?

3. What are the advantages or disadvantages Malunggay

has compared to traditional herbs used in ointments?

III. Significance of the study

Malunggay has many medical benefits such as its anti-inflammatory

properties and is commonly grown in many poor countries. This means
that Malunggay can be produced, made, and sold locally so that
impoverished individuals who need medicine for various medical reasons
but cannot obtain it due to economic reasons have an alternative which is
easier and less costly to obtain.

IV. Scope and limitations of the study

This study concerns itself with finding a less costly alternative to traditional

ointments using ointments synthesized using the Moringa Oleifera, or more

commonly known as Malunggay, plants. The aspects the researchers will be

looking into are the effectiveness of the ointment and a comparison of costs

between traditional ointments and Malunggay based ointments.

There are many variables in this experiment which are out of the

researcher’s control. Mainly, in terms of limited samples of Malunggay to study.

The Malunggay in various countries may differ slightly due to the local ph levels

of the soil, farming practices done in those areas, etc etc. The researchers will use

the Malunggay plants found in the Philippines due its availability for the

researchers.

V. Definition of Terms

Malunggay - It’s scientific name is Moringa Oleifera. It is also known as the

miracle tree, and with good reason. It’s leaves and other parts of it cotains various

chemicals and substances that contain medicinal benefits. Malunggay is also

known as an herbal plant with many medicinal benefits. It’s greenish leaves extract

a substance that is known to have healing properties or treat different types of

wounds, an example would be a small cut in the hand.

Ointments - An oil-based preparation that is applied to the skin. Whereas an

ointment has an oil base, a cream is water soluble.

Alternative - A choice limited to one or two possibilities, the selection

precludes any possibility.

VI. Review of related literature

According to a study conducted by Vanessa Abastillas, Malunggay contains

lunasin, lunasin is an antibiotic-like protection for the cells which also has

antifungal properties. Extracts of malunggay oil from its leaves have always been

known to address the following: immune system detoxification; management of

blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and speeds up healing of wounds.

The malunggay plant is filled with vitamins A, B, C, D, E and other minerals like

iron calcium selenium pottasium and magnesium. Moringa leaves are very rich in

essential amino acids which arent found in a lot of plants and it is also extremely

rich in proteins. It is a source of healthy cholestorol which is known to protect

against cardiovascular disease.

Malunggay leaves are completely safe to be consumed by humans. It doesn’t

have any side-effects or toxic elements. It is filled with flavonoids, antioxidants

which are necessary in fighting against free radicals casuing problems in the body.

It is also very convenient because it is widely grown in tropical and subtropical

areas like the Philippines.

VII. Conceptual Framework

Using Malunggay leaves, the researchers will obtain their extract and boil,

cool, and store it, once it is ready for testing, it will be applied on an open wound

to see its effects.

V. Methodology

Materials:

*Malunggay leaves *Apparatus for boiling

*Cotton swab *Apparatus for pounding

*Sterilized Container

Procedure:

After all the materials are gathered, the Malunggay leaves will be pounded

in order to bruise the leaves which ruptures the cells which causes more of the

healing extract of the Malunggay to be released. Afterwards, this extract will be

boiled. And then cooled. Once cooled the extract will be placed in sterilized

container for storage until applied to an open wound using a cotton swab for

testing purposes.
