Method Statement for Installation of Horizontal Drains

1.0. INTRODUCTION
Hillslopes can be stabilized by installing horizontal drains in the slope to
draw down the water table and reduce pore water pressures. The drains
are usually installed at a slight upward angle, to facilitate drainage.

2.0. MATERIAL USED

The material used for the prefabricated horizontal drains include:
a) U/PVC Pipe, Diameter, thickness & class.depends on clients specs.
b) Couplers to join U/PVC pipe
c) Geotextile, non-woven
d) MS Wire, S.W.G.16

3.0. FABRICATION
The horizontal drains shall be prefabricated in sufficient quantities prior to
installation so as not to leave any drilled hole open for long periods of time
to prevent collapse of soil.

The method of fabrication is as follows :

a) Prepare a length of U/PVC pipe and mark the slots to be cut using a
marker on top of the pipe.
b) Use a grinder to cut the slots on the pipe.
c) Wrap the pipe using the geotextile as per the drawing. Make sure the
geotextile is firmly wrapped. The number of layers to be wrapped shall
follow the drawing and clients requirements.
d) Use the MS wire to tie the geotextile firmly together at the spacing
according to clients requirements.

Note : Clients requirement/specification may

differ in the cutting of slots.

4.0. METHOD OF INSTALLATION

4.1. DRILLING
a) Prior to drilling, the slope shall be cleared of vegetation and
trimmed to the angle & profile as required by the client.
b) Survey & mark the location of the horizontal drains on the slope.
c) Using GI pipes or other appropriate supports, lift and position
the drilling rig at the first drill location.
d) Install the drill rod and drill bit and level the machine using an
angle level to the required tilt

e) Drilling is done using an air compressor connected to the drill

rod and bit. Assemble the air compressor and suitable air hose
to the rig.
f) The air compressor will deliver compressed air to the machine
while drilling is done. The drilled soil will be flushed out of the
borehole using the compressed air.
g) Advance the drill bit a little at a time depending on soil
hardness. Adjust the air compressor air flow rate to suit type of
soil, whether dry or wet soil accordingly.
h) Upon completion of the borehole, withdraw the rods completely.
i) Install the prefabricated horizontal drain by pushing it using
manpower into the hole, until the entire length is inserted.
