Along with UK Sport and The British Elite Athletes Association, we’re hosting ‘Navigating Your Future’ in Manchester on 4 December, with events planned at other locations in 2025. With guest speakers, talks, workshops and a number of employers present, the events aim to support and inspire athletes to consider their futures. Sign up or register interest 👉 bit.ly/3UJ0L2z

Leadership Lessons from Movies… Part 3 Movie: Phantom of the Open Story: Maurice Flitcroft, an older gentleman, is inspired by the 1974 Piccadilly World Match Play Championships and decides, having never played golf before that he will enter the British Open! Needless to stay his match doesn’t live up to Par! Being banned from every golf club in the UK and being outcast by the snobbish golfing community as a result he would be forgiven for never trying again. BUT he does, through hard work and practice and by adopting many alter egos to get himself into the championship, he plays another seven times! Fulfilling his dream of playing in the British open. Lesson 1 ⛳ : You will be humiliated, ridiculed, and outcast, that’s a given. The amazing Dr Brene Brown says, “if you're going to dare greatly [in life], you're going to get your ass kicked”. Most people would avoid that situation. But if you are going to go big with life and aim high you are also going to have to strap on your big pants and find a whole higher level of self-love. You need to be your own biggest fan, your own cheerleader and dig deep for a whole new level of self-belief. How do you keep going when no one is cheering you on? Lesson 2 ⛳ : I’m not qualified’ is not an excuse. Maurice had never hit a golf ball before he decided he wanted to play at the British open! Often, we disqualify ourselves because we think we haven’t got what it takes. The truth is, getting ‘what it takes’ requires hard work, perseverance and consistency. I have a vision for my life, a dream. And I realised that to get ‘there’ I need a Masters and a PhD. Och! That’s at least 10 years of study and a whole bunch of money that I don’t have. BUT just 4 years after this realisation I have completed a Masters at KCL, the most prestigious university in the UK. Not bad for a PE teacher from Glasgow. All going well in 3 years’ time, I’ll have enough money to do my PhD, and by the end of the decade, I'll have the qualifications I need to become what I want to be. And that is just the start! I’m not where I want to be and getting ‘there' is going to take me 10 years, but I’m prepared to do. Are you willing to go to any lengths? Lesson 3 ⛳ : You will become a whole lot of different people along the way. Okay, so Maurice Flitcroft literally had to become lots of different people to get onto the golf course! But we too will become lots of different versions of ourselves as we move forward. We will learn and grow and take on different personas to achieve our goal. Just because you are not who you need to be right now, doesn’t mean you will not be who you need to be when the time is right.

We manage a complex organisation with huge goals and immovable deadlines. Our outcomes define our success. Which of these (from just the last 7 days) would you say defines our success most: 1. Three Club alumni in GB crews for the Olympics Paris 2024. 2. Wins for our elite senior crews on the run-in to Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. 3. Para and adaptive athletes training for upcoming Regattas 3. Wins for our Junior athletes, some now ending their time with us but taking their skills with them. 4. Wins for our Masters, maintaining their fitness and competitive edge over the years. 5. Second wave of our Adult Learn to Scull course with 42 adults taking to the water for the very first time. 6. All of the above.

Why do members join? Why do they stay for decades? Why don’t they join somewhere else? They join and stay loyal because their needs are met. Here are seven common “golfer needs” → They want a challenge appropriate to their skill level. → They want the ability to improve their game. → They want camaraderie and a sense of belonging → They want time spent at the club to be relaxing. → They want great service on and off the course. → They want golf in a convenient, accessible location. → They want status. Nail the needs and golfers will have a heck of a tough time comparing you to other clubs. P.S. Any time I examine top clubs they all go above of beyond meeting each of these needs.

I still remember signing up for my first #ironman race. I started training and after the first run training I was thinking "OK, this was 7k. How the f*!$# am I going to run a marathon after the swim and the bike?!" The same thing happened after the first (10) swims. I couldn't imagine being able to swim almost 4 kilometers. After a few months of proper training I realized that this isn't too far away anymore. Now when I go out on my long training sessions I can run for 30+ kilometers and ride 150+ kilometers without too much thought. How you can use training as a way of boosting your confidence for the race is the topic of today's blog post in our Psychology of endurance sports series.

I have organized a workshop for December 11th, 2024. The difficulties in the field of competitive sport are extensive and omnipresent. The biggest problems we have in athletics are not with the knowledge or with the level, methodology or didactics of the technical disciplines. As specialist trainers and top trainers (women and men), we are dealing with the decline in values in society. Attributes such as resilience, loyalty, endurance, trust, honesty, confidence, self-confidence, positivity and life-affirming, stability, visionary, goal-oriented, and much more must be developed in even more athletes. A mammoth task. No longer a prerequisite!

SES ESOP Strategies – an #EOX National Service Provider – helped Seattle Gymnastic Academy transition from a partially ESOP-owned company to 100% ESOP to further reward the commitment of its staff and instructors, strengthen long-term business growth as an S-Corporation, solidify the business’s future management timeline, and provide liquidity for shareholders. This is another great example of how profitable companies in virtually any industry can become employee owned! Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eCSZ6zjP
