As we begin our celebrations we take time to reflect on... - Our members: their hard work and the diversity of their participation. - Our wins, our losses and the journey of each crew member to theirs. - Our new members, particularly those who started their rowing journey in 2024. - Those parted members, selected to compete in a celestial regatta. - Our committee, coaches and volunteers for making all we do possible. - The things we did well. - The things we didn't do well, but which we'll do better next year. - Our local community with our many friends and neighbours in and around Marlow. - Our rowing family; the successes and challenges they've faced and surmounted. We wish you all well with your own reflections and new prospects for 2025! British Rowing

Happy Saturday, Tout le Monde This week, I went mainstream, appearing on "Escape to the Country"! Available here for those in the UK: https://lnkd.in/ermNq_TW I had such a fun time filming with the exceptional Jo Robb (O'Connor). The presenter, Ginny Buckley, was keen to include us because of her concerns about the state of the Thames in Henley. Thank you, Ginny, for inviting us. And the terrific production team. I have included Ginny's final words, which fill me with hope for our campaign. By the way, next week is a big one. We will hear how much the water companies will be allowed to raise our bills. Much of this increase will be to service debt and, in Thames Waters's case, loans. This is money that has been stolen from us! Excellence is a habit. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." So said Aristotle. I was reminded of this recently by the excellent Naomi Riches MBE PLY DL. It has been front of mind as I look at my goals for 2025 and plan to achieve them. Some of my habits need replacing as they are not supporting the unrelenting pursuit of improvement which makes one excellent. How about you? What habits will you establish or replace in order to achieve your goals in 2025? Here's a photo of Naomi and the mixed coxed four winning gold, London 2012. Years of training and competing individually and as a group led up to this moment. Excellence is habit. The London 2012 strapline ‘Inspire a Generation’ made real… Thank you Richard Collins FICRS for this wonderful opportunity, I thoroughly enjoyed recording with you! My story, Playground to Podium, is at the core of all my keynote speeches, it is a relatable story of resilience and grit. You would be forgiven for thinking that after 16 years, I should ‘change it up’… but I won’t and this is why… The nuts and bolts may be the same; but the details, the themes, the messages and the takeaways have developed hugely over the years. My story is something that audiences of all sizes, all ages, and from a huge variety of industries can emotionally and intellectually connect with. One of my favourite audiences by far, is an audience of young minds… they are sponges and will take on new ideas and feelings, even if they don’t realise their impact for a few months or even years. I know my story sticks, I have had people talking to me 10 years or more after I visited their school… telling 'you came to my school', recounting some of the details and saying how it helped them. Even parents tell me of the impact I had on their children when I visited the school. Hearing that feels amazing… the opportunity to inspire young minds, to share my experiences and to help them understand what is possible, is such a privilege. #csraccreditation #playgroundtopodium #resilience #inspiration #inspireyoungminds
I am so pleased to share our latest podcast with Naomi Riches MBE PLY DL Hon DUniv (BNU) - Gold Medalist and inspirational Speaker. As a child, Naomi didn’t desire or expect to be an athlete, let alone a gold medal-winning rower. Labelled “disabled” at just a few months old, due to a severe visual impairment, it was expected that her life would be full of challenges and barriers. Bullying at school and lack of support from teachers resulted in low self-esteem and indifferent exam results. Yet, Naomi grew up with a strong desire not to be defined by what others saw as an impairment. For Naomi, sharing her life experiences with an audience, helping to inspire, motivate and empower them is a privilege. Please listen now: https://lnkd.in/gfz3jEUj Naomi talks passionately about Inspiring a new generation with resilience through talks at schools and the importance of support from businesses. "The belief that a good set of results can still outweigh lasting harm to individuals and longer-term reputational damage to sport is troubling and belies a tragic lack of awareness that different ways to succeed are possible." I find whenever there is a cultural crisis in sport or business or another part of the society that there is most to learn by considering - what structures and leadership facilitated this culture to take hold over time - what were the power imbalances within the environment that enabled these behaviours to be tolerated and normalised over a sustained period - what were the 'lived values' in these environments (as opposed to whatever is on the website) - what else is going on behind the scenes that has led to this situation. It's in those areas that we can find huge insights into culture and how to shape environments where people can achieve their best and thrive while doing so. I use the recent stories and comments sparked by Danny Care's autobiography revealing his experience of rugby under Eddie Jones to explore this further here: https://lnkd.in/eAv_-ctg #constantlearning #leadership #power #relationships #culturematters #leaders #values #culturechange #thrive #thelongwin

Dame Katherine Grainger will become the new Chair of the British Olympic Association, replacing the incumbent Sir Hugh Robertson. “It is a huge honour to be elected Chair of the British Olympic Association as the Olympics has been central to my life for nearly 30 years. As an athlete I felt first-hand the incredible influence and impact sport has on people’s lives. I look forward to embarking on this next chapter with the BOA."
