Jeff Bezos just pledged an initial investment of USD $60 million through his Bezos Earth Fund to improve the quality and availability of alternative proteins like plant-based meat. The investment will establish several Bezos Centers for Sustainable Protein focused on major technological barriers to the production of plant-based and cultivated meats, including reducing cost, increasing quality, and boosting nutritional content. Bezos Earth Fund Vice Chair Lauren Sánchez made the announcement earlier this week, and highlighted an urgent need for innovation in making the global food system sustainable. “We need to feed 10 billion people with healthy, sustainable food throughout this century while protecting our planet. We can do it, and it will require a ton of innovation,” said Sánchez. Read more on the PBN website - https://buff.ly/3wYXvqX

At the start of June, the Bezos Earth Fund announced the launch of its first Center for Sustainable Protein at the North Carolina State University (NC State) in the US. Called the Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein, the Bezos Earth Fund awarded NC State $30 million over five years to lead a center of excellence to create a research and biomanufacturing hub for alternative proteins, including the precision fermentation and cultivated meat industries. According to the announcement, the center will engage with partners from academia and industry to research, create, and commercialize new technologies. The Bezos Earth Fund also shared that it will support open-access research at its centers to develop a strong foundation for the broader field. The Bezos Earth Fund also announced that Believer Meats, Atlantic Fish Co, Jellatech, and Wild Earth will be industry partners for its North Carolina center. While several states in the US and European countries seek to ban cultured meat, the new Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein continues the emergence of research and commercialization centers focusing on the future of food. As more companies work towards scaling their production processes, particularly for cultivated meat, these research and commercialization hubs can provide access to the resources required to address the critical challenges of building the cultivated meat supply chain. Moving forward, the Bezos Earth Fund shared plans to establish further centers of excellence for sustainable proteins in Europe and Southeast Asia. https://buff.ly/3VLnlIK #cellag #futureoffood #research #ecosystem #cultivatedmeat #precisionfermentation #altprotein #cellbased

Considering the growing #cellularagriculture ecosystem in the state, it’s promising to see that the first Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein by the Bezos Earth Fund was announced in North Carolina. In addition to the announced industry partners for its North Carolina center (Believer Meats, Atlantic Fish Co, Jellatech, and Wild Earth), other #cellag companies based in North Carolina include BIOMILQ, a cell-based #dairy startup, and Tiamat Sciences Corp., a #molecularfarming startup. In December 2022, Believer Meats became the first cultivated meat company to announce that it was breaking ground on a commercial-scale facility in Wilson County, North Carolina. At the time, Believer Meats shared that it selected the location due to the highly qualified talent pool in the area. In addition, Wild Earth CEO Ryan Bethencourt previously shared with CellAgri (link in comment) why he believes North Carolina can become a key biotech and future food hub beyond California. As more companies work towards scaling up their production processes, research and commercialization centers can provide access to the resources required to address the key challenges of building the cultivated meat supply chain. #cellag #futureoffood #cultivatedmeat #cellbasedmeat #culturedmeat #scaling #ecoystem

The Bezos Earth Fund has committed $60 million to establish multiple Centers for Sustainable Protein. “We need to feed 10 billion people with healthy, sustainable food throughout this century while protecting our planet. We can do it, and it will require a ton of innovation" This investment directly addresses key challenges faced by plant-based businesses: affordability, nutrition, and consumer preference. Here's why alt-protein businesses should be excited: Lower Costs: Research focused on optimizing production processes has the potential to significantly bring down the price of alt-protein products, making them more accessible to a wider audience. Nutritional Powerhouse: Advancements in cell biology and engineering could lead to plant-based products with complete protein profiles, rivaling (or even surpassing) animal-derived protein in terms of nutrient content. Flavor & Texture Revolution: Juicy plant-based burgers and creamy alt-dairy products are already becoming indistinguishable from their traditional counterparts. But consumers are pushing for more. So further innovations in taste and texture are required. #altprotein #plantbased #sustainablefood #alternativeprotein

Pick of the day (courtesy Green Queen Media) It is all a question of seeing the glass half empty or half full. While Europe might have beaten the US in 2023 (what I cannot reconcile with my data), the overall volume is low when compared to the underlying markets. Furthermore, if I understand the graph with projections for 2024, the PE/VC European market is expected to halve (back to pre-pandemic levels), this means that a number of companies that funded back in 2020/2021 and 2022 will be incapable to further fund themselves (what I witness daily). As a result, defaults will continue to rise. What the markets really needs is consolidation (of technologies) and exits. #sustainability #foodtech #agtech #climatechange
