The US Department of Defense (DoD) announced its final round of biomanufacturing grants, with precision fermentation companies dominating the awards to expand domestic production capacity. Four cellular agriculture companies - Perfect Day , The EVERY Company, Cauldron Ferm , and Liberation Labs - received funding to develop plans for new US-based manufacturing facilities. Considering the infrastructure and scaling challenges facing the cellular agriculture field, the investment marks a promising shift in government support for the field, with up to $100 million in follow-on funding available for facility construction. The grants address one of the field's critical challenges: scaling production capacity to meet growing commercial demand for cell-cultured food products. The Every Company, which produces cell-cultured egg proteins, received $2 million to assess the feasibility of a US facility for manufacturing its core proteins. Perfect Day, the first company to commercialize precision fermentation dairy proteins, secured $1.24 million to plan a facility that could supply protein while providing allergen-free alternatives. Liberation Labs, which is already constructing a large-scale precision fermentation facility in Indiana, received $1.4 million to develop plans for scaling up operations. Australian company Cauldron secured $1.76 million to plan its first US facility utilizing its "hyper-fermentation" technology. The DoD's investment signals growing recognition of cellular agriculture's potential role in food security and supply chain resilience. As these companies work to establish new production facilities, their success could pave the way for more widespread adoption of precision fermentation technologies. #cellag #futureoffood #precisionfermentation #foodtech #sustainablefood

In a significant development in Europe, EFSA's GMO panel has issued a positive safety opinion for Impossible Foods s' soy leghemoglobin, a heme protein produced through genetically engineered yeast. The approval marks another step toward broader regulatory acceptance in the EU market, following similar authorizations in the US, Canada, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. The ingredient, crucial for providing meat-like flavor and color in Impossible's plant-based beef products, received positive assessments from both EFSA's Food Additive and GMO panels. Following a 30-day comment period, the European Commission will draft a decision for final approval. While Impossible Foods launched reformulated products without the heme protein in the UK in 2022, this regulatory milestone could enable the company to introduce its complete product line across the EU, pending final authorization from the Commission and Member States. #precisionfermentation #futureoffood

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has launched a new funding initiative to advance the development of alternative proteins, including cultivated meat and precision fermentation products. The program highlights Singapore's continued leadership in supporting cellular agriculture innovation, building on its position as the first country to approve cell-cultured meat sales. The grant will specifically target research and industry partnerships focused on enhancing the sensory attributes - taste, aroma, and texture - of novel foods while ensuring nutritional equivalence or improvement compared to conventional proteins. This initiative aligns with the country's broader food security strategy and follows its recent regulatory advancement in novel foods. While funding amounts were not disclosed, the program represents Singapore's systematic approach to building infrastructure and support systems for cellular agriculture innovation. #cellag #futureoffood #cultivatedmeat #cellbasedmeat #precisionfermentation

Cellular agriculture company Avant has expanded beyond cultivated seafood with the launch of its Zellulin BioPlatform, which produces marine cell-derived peptides and proteins for skincare applications. The technology isolates cells from fish in a one-time process before cultivating them to produce cell-identical compounds. The platform's first product, ZelluGen, demonstrated efficacy in clinical testing, with a 1% concentration showing improvements in skin hydration and collagen production. This advancement showcases how cellular agriculture technology can address sustainability challenges beyond the food sector, joining other companies like IntegriCulture in developing cell-cultured beauty and cosmetic ingredients. #cellag #futureoffood #cellbasedmeat #precisionfermentation
