Had the opportunity to see one of Dartmouth College’s many foreign study programs in action while in England last week. Tagging along with Professor Leslie Butler and her students on their walking tour of London was a highlight of my trip.
1979 LSA in Mainz was one of the most meaningful experiences at Dartmouth - living with a family, commuting via transit to class, traveling through the DDR on rail to Berlin, visiting family roots and relatives.
Dartmouth should explore foreign study to indigenous communities with the understanding that students go to learn from the people rather than go to "help" the people. My foundation has done this very successfully.
Such a great reminder of the transformative impact of our study abroad programs! This is exactly why we need to restore the programs that were cut—these experiences are at the heart of our mission and work.
Sian Leah Beilock, Amazing job leading with such courage and vision. Making Dartmouth a global leader.
So proud to be a Dartmouth alum with President Bielock now captaining the ship! And yes, few colleges do study abroad as well as Dartmouth! Keep up the great work!

3wAs I have told countless professional colleagues & friends, a 1975 Dartmouth study abroad program (in Goslar, Germany) transformed my life. I learned two key lessons: 1) the world is an amazing place & I needed/wanted to experience much more of it; & 2) universities pay faculty to travel the world. Those lessons yielded a 45-year career in international higher education & global engagement.
