“I worked for Rich for a couple years and while I found him tough I also found him to be very fair. One thing that really impressed me was that he apologized as a VP when he got it wrong. That is very rare, and won him a lot of trust with me personally. I also appreciated his willingness to try and learn a new and unfamiliar business. He was willing to listen to his experts, while still challenging what they had to say.”

How can an entry-level product manager stand out in a crowded job market?
Like business management, product management is not an entry level job. You cannot expect to be an "entry level" executive. You need to first build your brand, either through engineering, manufacturing, finance so those experiences bring some depth in addition to the width required to see the broader picture and strategy required of product management. Product managers have broad control of their product, all aspects, and are the "CEO" of their product.

How can Product Managers prepare for a senior role?
At least on the physical product side, product managers are essentially the mini-CEO of their portfolio. They are singularly responsible across the disciplines, to understand customer needs and market dynamics, synthesize that into a product specification, working with engineering and manufacturing to develop that into a marketable product, and testing and verifying that the specification is met, then integrating with sales and marketing for a successful product launch. This experience on a smaller scale exercises all the skills required for subsequent executive responsibilities.

What are the top 5 books for Product Management career development?
The Product Manager's Desk Reference by Steven Haines. I came across this reference while a GE executive, and it covered most of the basics I learned by experience in my GE roles. At TD Williamson I provided this reference to my PdM as a supplement to their training, which helped to build a high performing team.
