Long overdue post about attending and presenting at the Gas Machinery Research Council's Engine Analyzer & Reliability Workshop at Waukesha Gas Engines headquarters a couple weeks back. This is a great group of machinery doctors that diagnose issues to prevent engine damage, while also reducing unnecessary maintenance events. Of equal importance are the suppliers that develop the non-invasive tools and analysis software to help these analysts optimize their equipment and maximize uptime. Big thanks to Seth Johnson, Sheila Meehan and rest of the planning team for making this event happen! So why was I there for my 4th consecutive EAR? Emissions regulations and equipment age (some of these units are 70+ years old) are driving pipeline companies to retire these legacy machines in favor of newer technology. One replacement option is using an electric motor-driven compressor, which has a number of environmental and operational advantages, but carries the risk of creating interdependence between the electrical grid and our natural gas transmission network. RPower can help provide the necessary backup power to an electric-driven compressor station while also generating revenue when the generators are available to feed power to the grid, as needed. We can also help provide power to customers who are waiting on a grid interconnect, which can sometimes be years after a project would otherwise be completed. This allows 1) the further decarbonization of the gas industry, while 2) providing firming services to the electrical grid, and 3) generating revenue for our customers, who are not required to provide the upfront capital to make this all happen.
