💡 Lessons with Archie 🐶 Episode 2: Introducing a New Team Member Anyone with a multi-pet household knows introducing a new pet takes time and patience. We opted to take on the extra work of training a puppy AND service dog because Archie would have the best chance of success with all family members. The pack has to respect each other and work together. It's easy to focus attention on the new guy, when in reality, Archie is so busy adjusting, learning, and observing, that he's got plenty on his plate. So, why when we onboard a new team member, do we pay so little attention to the rest of the team and how they are impacted by the new person's arrival? Yes, onboarding and training is essential to a new employee's success and you want their experience to be positive; however, change impacts everyone. Putting emphasis on the rest of the team is as important, if not more so to long-term team success. As a leader, when a new person joins my team, I: ✔️ Schedule extended or extra 1:1s with current team members; they can ask questions and I articulate my vision for the team's growth/evolution. ✔️Spend time with the team to explain areas of responsibility for the new team member, when s/he can take on the work, and how it impacts current workload and priorities. ✔️Make time for relationship-building. Ask team members to schedule 1:1s with the new hire and ask them to avoid "work talk." Instead, tell them to have a coffee chat - for virtual employees, send a gift card for Starbucks and have them grab a beverage and get to know each other; if in the office, let them expense a lunch so they can spend time doing the same. ✔️Find the budget for an in-person meeting; do what you have to do to bring the team together within the first six months - don't do it immediately as you want onboarding to finish, the work to begin, and then bring everyone together to watch the team connect and "mesh." #lessonswitharchie #peoplebeforeprofessionals #teamwork

Administrative Professionals Day will be here before you know it! How are you planning to recognize these valuable employees? Sure, Starbucks and Amazon gift cards are great ideas. But I have some better ideas! - Invite your Admin to lunch. Together. With you. Engage in conversation and lean in. Get to know them. - Schedule a 1:1 and verbalize your gratitude using specific examples of times when they really made a difference. - Ask for their input! Your Admin is generally the eyes and ears of the organization. They have a perspective you wish you could have 😉 - Invest in your Admin. Provide resources for professional development. Now, when April 24th gets here and you’re frantically stopping at Starbucks that morning, don’t say I didn’t try!

I see all these notices from my colleagues accepting new roles through the LinkedIn feed. I always wish them well with a thumbs up or heart gesture. Yesterday, one of my colleagues called me after day two of his job to ask for advice. He joined a finance firm and had the worst first day and day two wasn’t looking good – they put him on the spot to give a presentation without any heads-up as a part of their “sink or swim” culture. Oh my gosh – who still does this? Here are some tips to let your new hire know you care: 1. Create a social media moment for them on their first day with treats and messages 2. Take them to lunch or DoorDash them a gift card and Zoom lunch together 3. Make sure they have a list of who they are to meet and that everyone is prepared 4. Don’t expect the recruiter or HR to do your team onboarding 5. Check-in 6. Make note of their birthday, work anniversary, favorite things, names of their pets, etc. I hope this helps.
