Professor Bruno Carmo gave an interview to Pesquisa FAPESP magazine about research into reducing pollutant emissions from oil rig support vessels. The professor explains that, based on real data, mathematical-computational models of the power system of this type of vessel were developed. The models were then operated with the same parameters that real ships were operating with. They found that the results were the same and then used the models to optimize the use of the generators. This resulted in a reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Do you want to know more about the Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI) research? Delighted to share insights from my participation in a European Geosciences Union (EGU) 2024 in Vienna, Austria, thought-provoking conference session on "Impact of Emissions Estimation Uncertainty on Methane Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MMRV) Programs" by Daniel Zimmerle ( Colorado State University, specializes in microgrids, energy, controls, and systems) In the era of heightened focus on reducing methane emissions in oil and gas operations, regulatory and voluntary reporting programs like MMRV have emerged as crucial mechanisms. However, the efficacy of these programs hinges on the accuracy of emission estimation methods. Daniel Zimmerle abstract sheds light on four critical areas of concern: 1. Accuracy challenges persist in commonly used methods, with discrepancies observed across facilities. 2. 'Measurement informed inventory' methods require refinement for effective emission reporting updates. 3. Uncertainties exist in extrapolating facility-scale estimates to basin scale, impacting regional emission estimates. 4. Continuous emissions monitors exhibit limitations in quantification accuracy, both in controlled and field conditions. While advanced methods offer promise for emissions detection and mitigation, it's imperative for stakeholders to acknowledge and address the uncertainties and biases inherent in these estimation techniques. Special thanks to Daniel Zimmerle for his expertise in microgrids, energy, controls, and systems. Thank you for sharing this valuable information! Let's collaborate to refine methodologies and build robust programs that drive meaningful progress towards methane emission reduction goals. #MethaneEmissions #MMRVPrograms #EnvironmentalImpact #Sustainability #ConferenceInsights
