In a recent peer-reviewed article, Professor Robert Howarth of Cornell University concluded that "Overall, the greenhouse gas footprint for LNG as a fuel source is 33% greater than for coal when analyzed using GWP20, (160 g CO2-eqivalent/MJ vs 120 g CO2-eqivalent/MJ). Even considered on the time frame of 100 years after emission (GWP100), which severely understates the climatic damage of methane, the LNG footprint equals or exceeds that of coal". https://lnkd.in/dPBhbCZt Ireland currently takes roughly 20% of its natural gas supply from the Corrib gas field, and 80% from the UK Gas grid. In 2022 (the most recent year published) the UK gas supply was 27% from LNG, the majority of that from US LNG. No doubt the level of LNG in UK gas supply is even higher now. So Ireland already uses more imported LNG than domestic gas supply (27% 0f 80% is 21.6%) in its energy mix. Independent scientific research carried out by consultants Sustain:able shows that the average carbon intensity of imported LNG from the UK to Ireland was 78 kgCO2/boe. The same study showed that a new Corrib-like find would have an average carbon intensity of less than 4 kgCO2/boe, i.e. around 5% of that of imported LNG. Perhaps the most useful thing the Goverment could do with its €13 billion windfall would be to explore for new, low emissions domestic gas near Corrib? It would be a lot more sensible that continuing to rely on importing highly carbon intensive LNG from the UK, as we currently do.

Energy Transition, Energy Diversification, Energy Expansion. There are many different terms/buzz words being thrown around as we set out on the journey to lower emissions, reach net zero emissions and even go carbon negative. However, it is helpful, and a healthy reality check every now and then to check on the pulse of what is actually happening. Sure, there are lots of press releases, government funding opportunities, fundraises, innovative technologies, and so forth, but what reality is for those with boots on the ground pushing the boundaries. Enverus Intelligence team put out this graph recently detailing the "Dead Zone in the Energy Transition Capital Stack" and I found it quite interesting. Just at first glance - there is a massive "Dead Zone" for majority of the key technologies being talked about for helping us hit our net zero targets. Why is this?? Are we actually making as much progress as we need to be? Are we realizing that this will actually be a much heavier lift than just some COP announcement? Second take - Industry, whether it be O&G, manufacturing, utilities, or tech this is where a large portion of the funding is coming from...so, when people want to cancel certain industries, remember that these very industries trying to clean up are the ones enabling the advancement of the technologies that will curb emissions. #emissions #netzero #geothermal #hydrogen #oilandgas #sustainability #collaboration #innovation #investment #strategy #capital https://lnkd.in/g-vCYNF7

🌍 Subsurface Success at COP29🌍 The unanimous endorsement of Articles 6.2 and 6.4 at COP29 is a game-changer for carbon markets—and it unlocks incredible opportunities for the subsurface industry, including #geothermal, direct air capture (#DAC), carbon capture and storage (#CCS), and subsurface energy #storage. Here’s why I am incredibly positive after Baku: 1️⃣ Clarity and Trust in Carbon Markets: Article 6.4 creates a robust framework for trading high-integrity carbon credits, backed by stringent measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) standards. This means subsurface projects can now scale more effectively, attracting critical investment while ensuring environmental integrity. 3️⃣ Investor Confidence: Mechanisms like buffer credit pools to manage risks (e.g., CO₂ leakage) reduce uncertainties for long-term subsurface investments, making these projects more attractive to stakeholders. 4️⃣ Alignment with Global Climate Goals: Subsurface technologies can now play a direct role in helping countries meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This recognition positions our subsurface-centred industry as a cornerstone of global climate action. I am convinced that this is a moment of #transformation for our industry. In 2020 energy hubs was just an idea. Fast forward 4 years and we have a demonstrable understanding on how energy hubs could play a pivotal role in the important brown to green energy transition. Without ambition, scale and collaboration we will build an inefficient future energy system. Bringing the energy hubproject and hydrogen backbone projects together it’s easy to realise the scale of ambition and more importantly, the scale of the opportunity. 🚨 Prediction for discussions around the Just Transition 🚨 As this article shows, most discussions around the Just Transition currently focus on what happens to oil and gas workers as we decarbonise. This narrative works well as a piece of political communication for constituencies with a lot of such workers. However, check out these numbers in the article about wages: 👉 “North Sea workers have an annual average salary of £88,000, while those working in the oil and gas supply chain earn an average of £51,000 a year. This is well above the average annual salary of £29,000 in Scotland – and above the £42,600 average wage of employees in the clean energy sector” Once we have moved beyond surface-level dialogue around the Just Transition, I doubt the general population is going to be that concerned about the “just” treatment of workers who earned 2-3 times more than average (in work that caused the climate crisis in the first place) 🤔 🧠 The Just Transition MUST pivot to be about EVERYONE, not just oil and gas workers. BP has abandoned a target to cut oil and gas output by 2030 as CEO Murray Auchincloss scales back the firm's energy transition strategy to regain investor confidence, three sources with knowledge of the matter said. When unveiled in 2020, BP's strategy was the sector's most ambitious with a pledge to cut output by 40% while rapidly growing renewables by 2030. BP scaled back the target in February last year to a 25% reduction, which would leave it producing 2 million barrels per day at the end of the decade, as investors focused on near-term returns rather than the energy transition.

Daily #Geothermal post: Have successfully worked through the Exploration Phase Geothermal Resource Assessment (and satisfied legal, regulatory, commercial, and funding/finance requirements), it would be time to move into the Development Phase. Utilising the Exploration Data, including the initial producibility and injectability test results, a numerical model would be calibrated and natural state modelling would be progressed. In order to finalise Development Drilling locations and detailed designs, all the previous model results and subsurface data would be used to update a Leapfrog 3D model / 3D Reservoir model for use as a Development Model. Once drilling was completed and operations begun, production and injection history data would be used to update and maintain a Production Model PyTOUGH that could be used to investigate various production and injection scenarios to ensure the best performance from the reservoir was maintained and preserved. Just what could #Apus Energy’s Atum 1 well mean for Guinea-Bissau's offshore future? 🌊 Apus Energy DMCC is expected to drill the Atum prospect in the #MSGBC Basin in late 2024. If successful, Atum 1, which is targeting 314 MMbbl of recoverable resources, would be only the second offshore discovery in Guinea-Bissau and could pave the way for more deepwater exploration. The project plans to use an FPSO vessel and gas injection to enhance oil recovery and reduce emissions. With growing geopolitical unrest, and headwinds in renewables, future UK energy policy should recognise the vital role that oil and gas will continue to play.
