Yesterday's #ISTPColloquium had the privilege of hosting Professor Kavita Surana! Her talk, "Accelerating Innovation in the Global Value Chains of Clean Energy Technologies," offered deep insights into achieving climate and economic goals through innovation and green policy. Professor Surana highlighted three key policy issues: modernizing energy systems, securing supply chains, and accelerating innovation. She discussed the critical role of policy in shaping innovation and manufacturing, especially as global manufacturing locations shift. Focusing on the wind energy sector, she mapped the global value chain, revealing the relationships between suppliers and OEMs. Her research showed that while new manufacturing hubs emerge, high-complexity innovations remain concentrated in developed countries or large markets like China and India. Her findings stressed the need for comprehensive policy mixes that integrate climate, energy, and industrial goals, and tailored policies based on the maturity of technology or industry. Thank you, Kavita, for an enlightening session on the complexities and opportunities in clean energy innovation. It was a pleasure delivering two talks at the Carbon UT annual conference on the techno-economic-environmental aspects of formate-based CCUS, and rock wettability in CCS. In the first talk, I discussed how the use of formate as a carbon carrier outweighs CO2 in terms of carbon storage, storage security, and oil production, and how carbon storage incentives (e.g., 45Q tax credit) should consider alternative carbon carriers in CCUS applications. In the second talk, I explored how different aspects of CO2 storage projects in saline aquifers are associated with various optimal wettabilities and how wettability can be artificially altered to improve a CCS project. #CO2 #CCS #CCUS #CLIMATECHANGE #45Q #CARBON #ENVIRONMENT #ENERGYTRANSITION #wettability #rock #salineaquifer Thanks to Energi Simulation and Dr. Ryosuke Okuno
The 2nd Energi Simulation IAP on Carbon Utilization and Storage meeting was held at UT Austin on May 23-24, 2024. Representing Energi Simulation, Duke Anderson, Andrew Seto and Bob Gochnour participated in the annual program review, with 50 other researchers and sponsors who also attended in-person or online. Excellent progress has been made in the experimental and numerical modelling studies of nanobubble or formate/CO2 for EOR/CCS, CO2 mineralization, CO2/water wettability alteration, CO2 capture as bicarbonate, as well as other novel ideas. We are very pleased with the efforts of Dr. Ryosuke Okuno (Energi Simulation Research Chair) and his research team at UT Austin in developing leading-edge technologies to help accelerate the energy transition to Net-Zero. #research #energy #ccus #nanobubble #co2 #technology #energytransition #netzero #simulation #future #innovation

🎉 Isabell Bagemihl has won the award for Best Research Paper in Energy! She has developed a multi-scale model – from reaction channel to process-scale – to help guide fundamental electrolyser research, bringing a closed carbon cycle ever closer. "We wanted to increase our understanding of maximum operational efficiency for existing electrolyser designs for CO2 conversion and bridge the gap between reactor design and economic viability. Until now, these two worlds existed independent of each other." 👉 Read more about the research here: https://edu.nl/qafyu #climatechange #university #science #research
