Excited to be sharing insights from Briter's first State of Agtech Investment 2024 report powered by #AgBase at the 8th Mercy Corps AgriFin Learning Event (#ALE2024) and participating in a panel discussions with Ali Hussein Kassim Tamara Cook Toffene Kama and Sieka Gatabaki. A few observations coming out of our data that we are excited to explore 👇 📈 Funding to #Agtechs has been more stable than other sectors in Africa (like #Fintech and #Ecommerce) and remains above 2019 and 2020 levels in terms of volume of funding and number of deals. Is this a signal that the sector is more resilient or are a few deals hiding the realities on the ground? 🏦 Non-commercial and semi-commercial funders are playing a bigger role with 40% of AgTech deals worth over $1 million having at least a DFI, donor or foundation as a funder. How do we ensure this is crowding in versus crowding out commercial funding? 💸 Similar to the wider #startupecosystem in Africa, there has been an increase in the diversification of funding instruments used with more debt being used particularly for Agtech's with physical assets (Farm #Robotics, Mechanisation & Equipment and #Logistics, Transportation and Warehousing #Infrastructure). Does this mark a shift in funder preferences or adding more noise to the ecosystem? 🌍 #Kenya still accounts for the majority of funding, but countries like #Ethiopia and #Zambia are seeing a larger and larger share of startup funding going to #Agtechs. Is this because #Agtech is actually increasing in these market or because other sectors are decreasing? 🌿 #AI is getting more attention, but startups operating at the intersection of #agriculture and #climate (mostly without AI) continue to shape the direction of funding. What are the early AI use cases in Agtech teaching us about it's potential? We will be sharing more from the report next week when we launch it at #ALE2024.
