The Affordable Housing Initiative European Partnership is moving to another level, offering individually designed training. Last Thursday (December 5), we gathered policymakers, social and affordable housing professionals, cities, and key actors in Europe’s housing sector for a networking lunch hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee in the European Commission to celebrate the launch of Phase II of the Affordable Housing Initiative. 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 Oliver Röpke, President of the EESC, described the programme as “a significant step forward in ensuring affordable, sustainable, and dignified housing across Europe" that should be "a platform for partnerships and collective action.” MEP Marcos Ros Sempere called for urgency in addressing the crisis, noting: “The EU has a critical role to play: we can invest, regulate, and encourage Member States to establish common rules for better housing. The time to act is now.” MEP Kim van Sparrentak underscored the momentum: “We must prioritise social housing districts. With the political will we have today, we cannot let this opportunity slip away.” Amaryllis Verhoeven from the European Commission's DG GROW emphasised the importance of building on successful practices while fostering innovation and partnerships. She highlighted the critical role of public, cooperative, and social housing providers within the social economy, stressing that private funding must be integrated into the solutions. Bent Madsen, President of Housing Europe, reflected on the progress: “Three or four years ago, such a programme would have been unimaginable. Today, it is about more than housing; it’s about building a fairer and more sustainable Europe.” More about the launch. https://lnkd.in/gpeDhygj Led by Housing Europe with key partners including EBC, ECTP, Energy Cities, GNE Finance, and SINTEF, and co-funded by the European Union, the AHI’s lighthouse district learning programme will support local projects tackling affordability and climate challenges. 📢 This phase marks a crucial moment in addressing Europe’s housing crisis, offering tailored, cost-free training to accelerate sustainable and affordable housing solutions across the continent.
