As usual, outstanding work by Angela Splinter and her team at Trucking HR Canada. Agree with her comments on why increasing costs not drivers are the industry’s biggest concern. “We have seen a bit of a slowdown, so the hiring of drivers hasn't been that front-and-centre concern that we've seen over the last many years.” I also think that the survey is a reflection of the reality that a growing segment of our industry doesn’t appear to have a chronic driver shortage. #Trucking #supplychain #leftlane #riteroute

Almost everything the Government does regarding laws and regulations forced on the trucking industry has to do with safety according to them. The Government now regulates how much money a driver can make with the HOS rules. There is no overtime in OTR trucking. You have 70 hours to make your money and if 20-30 hours of those are sitting at docks where you don't get paid, you have even less than 70. It's time to put a minimum rate per mile on freight because it is a safety issue. It's one big circle. Put truck drivers under the FLSA so they have to be paid for all hours. Some things are part of driving a truck like checking your oil, doing an inspection, and routinely checking your equipment, even sitting waiting on your next load. Those are things you don't necessarily need to be paid for. But, sitting at a dock waiting on others to do their job isn't or shouldn't be a freebie for truck drivers. The people doing the loading and unloading of those truckers' trailers aren't required or forced to work for free.

The vehicle haulage industry is facing a critical challenge with a severe driver shortage, exacerbated by the Great Resignation. It's clear that just increasing pay isn't enough to attract and retain drivers. Companies need to rethink their operational efficiency and improve working conditions to create a more attractive environment for drivers. To address this issue, consider implementing these strategies: - Maximize Driver Time: Find ways to reduce inefficiencies in logistics that keep drivers waiting. Small adjustments can save valuable time. - Embrace Flexibility: Adapt to drivers' needs for short hauls and work-life balance. This approach can significantly enhance job satisfaction. - Enhance Working Conditions: Ensure parking and loading facilities are safe and accessible for drivers, empowering them to perform their jobs with ease. - Collaborate Across the Industry: Engage with partners to share loads and resources, making every trip count and reducing empty hauls. By taking these steps, companies can help mitigate the driver shortage and create a more sustainable future for the industry. Streamlining processes not only benefits drivers but also enhances overall client service and satisfaction. What strategies have you seen work effectively in your operations?
