Here's what caught my attention Grab, one of Southeast Asia's tech giants, just announced a mandatory 5-day return-to-office policy starting December 2nd, 2024. The timing? Just one day after Singapore's new Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangements (FWAs) take effect. Talk about perfect timing for a case study! Why this matters? On one side a government framework designed to empower employees with flexible work options. On the other hand, a major tech company is taking a firm stance on full-time office presence. What's particularly interesting is the ripple effect this could create. With Grab being a prominent tech employer in Singapore, their approach could influence how other companies interpret and implement these new guidelines. From conversations with industry peers, I'm hearing mixed reactions: 👉 Employees are concerned about work-life balance adjustments 👉 HR leaders are watching closely to understand implementation precedents 👉 Business leaders are evaluating their own flexible work strategies The most intriguing aspect? Grab's willingness to consider disciplinary action for non-compliance. This raises important questions about the true spirit of workplace flexibility in our post-pandemic world. "What about candidates who bring their parents to interviews?" This question came up during my recent workshop and triggered a sudden burst of laughter. It also reminded me of a situation I encountered years ago while interviewing a candidate for a PR Executive role. At that time, the candidate (Ms. L) arrived with her mother and politely asked if her mum could wait in the lobby. I didn’t think much of it and led Ms. L into the meeting room for her interview with the PR Director. Our office setup did not include a Receptionist and some of our staff were seated adjacent to the meeting room. While the interview was in progress, the mother started walking around the office, questioning the staff: ➡ "How is your CEO?" ↘ "Is he difficult to work with?" ⬇ "Do you work late often here?" Before long, I received messages from my team: "Gladys, can you please come out? This lady is asking us some uncomfortable questions." I quickly stepped out and requested the mother to stay seated in the lobby. When I returned to the meeting room, I asked Ms. L why she had brought her mum along. She admitted that she was too nervous and needed her mother to accompany her. As much as we tried to empathize with her, the PR position required not only strong communication skills but also confidence - qualities the Hiring Manager did not see in her that day. This incident happened in 2018 and yet the issue is still prevalent today. Dear job seekers, While we understand you may be anxious, bringing your parents to an interview might not always be the best approach. Believe in yourself and trust the process - you got this. To all parents, As a mother of 3 kids, I completely understand where you’re coming from but sometimes you need to learn to let go. Teach them to be independent by continuing to stay in the car or have a coffee downstairs. 🇸🇬𝗦𝗚: 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗙𝗪𝗔𝘀) 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻! Interestingly, someone I personally know has created this comic explaining the new Guidelines for FWAs. This FWAs was announced last Tuesday, 16 Apr 2024, by both the TAFEP Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices Workgroup and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Although the comic was created out of his own joy, I find them very well explained and humorous (using Singlish) too. I got his exclusive approval to use it for my post here. Appreciate his kindness truly. Thank you. You may want to read the comic first so that you have a better understanding of what this FWAs is about. Below are just my thoughts and conclusion. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Whenever there is a new law or new set of guidelines, I feel sad as well as glad at the same time. Sad because we are so incapable of being reasonable and logical that we need the law to rule us. Glad because there are laws to address matters acted by unreasonable and illogical us. Nonetheless, a coin has 2 sides, as laws, rules or guidelines are always a double-edged sword that could work for you or against you at different times. Sorry that I digressed…. Don't ever take things for granted.  (5) Again, no harm for you and your husband purchasing your dream home with a joint loan, provided you have at least another home under your absolute ownership.  (6) Bear in mind, in most cases of divorce, it's gruesome and exasperated.  (7) There is hibah provision, but I'm not in favor of that for my own reasons.
