The Canadian government has launched an AI Safety Institute (AISI), joining a list of countries that have created their own institutes to ensure the safe and responsible development of AI systems. With an initial budget of $50 million over five years, Canada’s AISI will be housed within the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development and will conduct research under two streams: one led by nongovernmental experts, allowing Canadian and international researchers to explore critical AI safety questions, and another directed by government priorities, tackling issues like cybersecurity and working with international AI safety organizations. #ai #artificialintelligence #innovation #governance

I comment below on the passing of yesterday's #us sponsored resolution at the #unitednations on the need for a common approach given the potential benefits and dangers of #artificialintelligence. As with much #un activity its significance is largely symbolic though it shows that everybody is waking up to the importance of the latest #technology revolution. What concrete regulations for #ai America and the #uk eventually settle for will have more of an impact.

AI foundation models can be thought of as a new class of infrastructure supporting social and economic activity. We built roads, railways, airports and tunnels to support industry and grow the economy last century. We'll keep building these things but this century economic activity will be increasingly supported by AI foundation models. What are they? Read our latest report.
Researchers at Australia’s national science agency are “bullish” on the potential productivity gains to be had from developing foundation AI models in Australia, and say that building sovereign capability should be seriously considered.
