Let's talk about benefits! Last week, I moderated a panel of Gartner associates/former interns who shared insights on our most underrated benefits. It's surprising how few college students inquire about benefits, so I wanted to shed light on what full-time employees can enjoy. Here's what they highlighted: - Incentifit program: Associates receive $500 a year for health/wellness/office purchases like running shoes, office furniture, workout equipment, state park passes, and so much more. - PTO Dedication: Generous time off and encouragement to utilize all of it! - Employee Stock Purchase Program: Dedicate a percentage of your salary to buy company stock at a discount quarterly. 365 days ago, I bid adieu to TIAA, an organization that shaped my career from an internship to a fulfilling 3-year journey. They say your first workplace is always special, and TIAA proved that true. Today, I'm penning down this post from a completely different world - as a master's student in Business Analytics & Information Systems at the University of South Florida. This year has been a testament to the power of stepping out of one's comfort zone. Fast forward to today from working with industry leaders at TIAA to juggling roles as diverse as dining staff and exam proctor, while also securing an internship at Sarasota County Government, every experience has been a building block in my professional and personal growth. To my amazing mentors and colleagues at TIAA - Marie McFadden, Dinesh Panday, Reena Jain, Preetha Nair and the entire team your positive influence continues to guide me through new challenges. Fellow international students will resonate with the delicate balancing act of academics, part-time work, and the constant hunt for career opportunities. I’m originally from Las Vegas, NV and moved to Columbus, OH to begin working at Nationwide. I recently transitioned to remote work with my move to NYC (I told myself I could fulfill my dream of moving here when I passed my last actuarial exam!). My newly found free time will be spent exploring the city! Some of my favorite activities include running through the parks and watching theatre performances. 🎤 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗢𝗟𝗔 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿? I would not be in my current role without OLA. I joined OLA as a student back in 2017 and landed my first summer internship with Nationwide at the 2017 ALPFA Convention. OLA was instrumental in helping prepare my resume and practice for interviews so I would be successful at the career fair. I’ll forever be grateful for the guidance that the OLA leaders have provided me, and I am excited to connect with more amazing Latino actuarial professionals as the organization continues to grow. 🎤 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆? My favorite thing about this career is that I am always learning. One can never be bored as an actuary since there is always another challenge one can take on. The exams of course offer great opportunities to learn interesting material, but I think on the job is where learning can feel the most rewarding. I was especially excited to join the Annuity Valuation team because I knew it would require me to fully master product dynamics and reserve methodologies as well as understand how managing our liabilities corresponds to the methodology of pricing derivative securities. Getting these concepts to click is extremely satisfying! The main problem I noticed regarding this matter is that in start, the companies and managers do not put enough pressure on interns or new employees that result in them thinking that there is zero work load and the job is all about relaxation. Sudden work load and responsibilities make the lazy untrained employees frustrated and eventually they leave.

#Day_4_of_my_consistency_challenge #Expectations_vs_Reality Back in pharmacy school, I had it all planned: graduate in 2023, secure an internship by January 2024, and start building my career. I’d even mapped out how I’d use my internship earnings to jumpstart my journey. Now, fast-forward to November 2024, and here I am—still waiting for my first interview. When my induction took about 8 months post-graduation due to unforeseen accreditation issues, I knew I needed to adjust. I began volunteering as a locum pharmacist in a community pharmacy, which helped me sharpen my skills and gain hands-on experience with everything I learned in school. While at it, I also enrolled in the ALX Virtual Assistant training, hoping to secure my first gig upon completing the program and start supporting CEOs in boosting their productivity. But once again, reality had other ideas. One lesson I’ve learned is that setbacks and delays don’t define us—they challenge us to adapt, persevere, and refine our goals. To anyone facing similar hurdles: don’t give up. Keep building, keep strategizing, and keep positioning yourself for success. The effort will eventually pay off. I’m still actively applying for pharmacy internships and pitching myself for Virtual Assistant roles. The journey may be taking longer than I expected, but I’m committed to making every step count. Today I had the opportunity to spend some time with the TIAA interns. Engaging with and learning from this next generation of marketers and leaders brings me so much joy. Their energy, fresh perspective and passion for growth is inspiring.   I shared some of my lessons learned throughout my career to date, including: - The best marketers are endlessly curious. About their customer, their category, their competition, and their craft. - Observe the leaders around you - what traits do you want to emulate and more importantly, which do you never want to exhibit. Use that information to formulate the kind of leader you want to be. - Careers are like a wall of lego blocks. If you stack every block one on top of the other, you won't build a strong wall. If you put some side by side, sometimes overlapping, you build the strongest wall. Think of each career opportunity as the next lego block in your career wall. - Be intentional about building your personal brand. Build it around your unique superpowers. Nurture it and protect it. I am excited for their internship at TIAA this summer to be one of the formative lego blocks in their career wall.
