Racism As A Distraction Toni Morrison famously said: “The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing”. I bring this up because I see a shared experience between myself and the current VP of the US. Her opponent questioned her race, but what did the media Boston Globe Media and The Washington Post do? Look at this headline! https://lnkd.in/gFzAKGBm The writers wrote : "A week after entering the race, the first Black and Indian American woman to top a party’s presidential ticket is contending with Trump’s assertion that she leaned into being Black for political expediency." No, she ain't, you are the one doing it with headlines and stories like these. Like Toni said, there will always be one more thing! So what's her next pivotal moment? When the other candidate questions her love for family or love for her country, I dread what the headlines will say. As a society, we can do better. I will end with this quote: “Educating the conqueror is not our business. But if it were, the best way to do it is to not explain anything to him, but to make ourselves strong”.

Black students are getting a boost thanks to Mike Bloomberg.   His foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, just donated $600 million to four historically Black medical schools.   The unprecedented gift will provide $175 million each to Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine, with an additional $75 million going to Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. An extra $5 million will support the establishment of a new medical school in New Orleans by Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health.   Bloomberg’s investment will diversify the medical field and ensure that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to pursue their dreams, regardless of race or socioeconomic status.   This donation will also empower the next generation of Black doctors and create a more equitable healthcare system.   In a recent interview, Howard University’s president, Ben Vinson III, called it “transformational” for its potential to cultivate future health professionals and invest in the wealth and health of both students and the communities they will serve. Dr. James E.K. WEDNESDAY WISDOM Today, we honor Juneteenth, a profound celebration of freedom, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of the Black community. As Dr. Opal Lee wisely most and recently stated, “4th of July freed the land while Juneteenth freed the people.” Today, June 19th, is a powerful reminder that true liberty is only achieved when ALL individuals experience the same rights and freedoms. Last week, I listened to Dr. Lee as she so eloquently stated, “we are all Americans - no hyphenation needed.” Juneteenth is more than a historical milestone; it represents the ongoing journey towards equality, justice, and inclusion. It’s a call to action for each of us to reflect, educate, and contribute to a society where diversity is celebrated and everyone’s voice is heard. Let's use this day to foster conversations, support each other's growth, and build bridges that unite us in our shared humanity. Together, let's champion the values of Juneteenth by embracing its spirit of hope and determination. Whether through mentorship, community service, or simply amplifying voices not normally heard or acknowledged. Each of us has a role in creating a future where freedom and equality are not just ideals, but lived realities. Happy Juneteenth!
