Delivering the words to say to cope with illness. Certified Child Life Specialist and Founder of Child Life To Go.
This year has held a lot of "what ifs" for me, filled with long conversations huddled around my kitchen table with my closest people, dreaming about possibilities. What if parents were empowered with words to share with their kids when it feels like there are none? What if maxed-out child life specialists had access to grab-and-go teachings and tools for their patients? What if they felt fully confident as experts in diagnosis education? What if families had access to coping tools and conversation starters to aid in their healing and processing even after discharge from the hospital? What if purpose could be found in pain? What if my degree in education and counseling found a perfect blend? What if I tried something new on this already existing platform? What if... coming soon.

As seen in the video, one of the resources we offer is the Seeds of Hope learning series. Seeds of Hope guides you in navigating the dementia journey and allows you to hear directly from professionals working in the field. It provides support from diagnosis until the end of life through education and practical tools. When you begin to wonder about how to cope with situations such as: 1. What do I do when they don’t want to take a shower anymore? 2. How do I communicate with them effectively? 3. How am I going to afford this? 4. What is respite, and where can I find it? 5. What legal issues might arise that I should be prepared to address? etc The Seeds of Hope learning series holds your hand through the stages of dementia progression so you are prepared and in control. I took all of you on a run with me today to help clear my head and this thought downloaded... Parents are often faced with having to make very important decisions like: Should my child start Gr 1 or spend another year in reception? Should my child remain in mainstream or move to a remedial school? Should my child move to a vocational or skills-based curriculum? Should my child take medication? And we are at the mercy of professionals and medical practitioners who advise us and tell us what we should do. We have to trust and have blind faith that we are making the right decision. The more information we have at our disposal and the more educated and aware we are, the more empowered and confident we feel. Join the parent masterclass, "No Limits To Learning - Empowering Neurodiverse Minds and never feel disempowered again. Observational learning is a more effective way of learning in comparison to learning that happens when taught. This is because in observational learning the brain is more receptive to the knowledge received. The child pays attention to things that are of interest to him, retains the knowledge gained and applies it in life as an when required. In the process of gaining knowledge via observation, the learning is better because the child wilfully applies own logic to understand what his sensory system has put in front of him. On the other hand, when taught, the child may be forced to learn what is not compatible with his own liking. In the context of child upbringing, a child’s behaviour may not be always the outcome of what he has been consciously taught by the Primary caregiver. The behaviour is quite often an outcome of his own learnings from his environment which includes people other than his primary caregiver. It can be said that a child brought up well/bad is the outcome of his environment and not only the teachings of his primary caregiver. #learninganddevelopment #childdevelopment #parenting

I attended an Evening at Kingsley School. David Loyld gave a talk about SEND and how families are struggling for a Diagnosis and reasons for long waiting. He spoke about how individuals in the medical profession struggle to maintain good mental health because they are supporting soo many patients, average daily should be..25 the Medics/Doctors/Paediatrician/Nurses see 75 + a day. As they want to help us! Understanding Special Educational Needs in children and adults is soo important. How do you learn about this? Is this a subject that can discussed during PHSE in schools? Staff training? I have gained so much knowledge by doing my own research talking to other parents/SEN teachers/attending talks. I really hope with new government will support more training in schools for all staff. So our children can get the right support they need. I highly recommend ACE (Austic Children Embraced) for support or questions. One thing I have taken away from today's meeting..I asked many questions - correct - questions will give you answers it may not be what we are looking for now, but it's a start. Help and support is available even if your child does not have a diagnosis. We are our children's voice.
