Amazing work!

Earlier this month, The Center For Educational Partnerships's Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network, including Francisco García-Quezada and diane howitt, hosted a professional development session for educators at the New York Historical Society. This event was a wonderful celebration of Hispanic heritage, and participants at the event were able to explore the deep and varied history of Spanish-speaking individuals and communities in what is now the United States. Participants were also able to hear from a variety of experienced  presenters, utilize the museums’ materials to learn as well as tour the museum’s galleries, and explore ways to incorporate museum-inspired and inquiry-based teaching strategies into the classroom. Educators at this event were empowered with new FURBY features, data driven strategies, and effective support to use to support their multilingual learners.

Anita Batisti, PhD. Associate Dean of Fordham GSE and Director of The Center For Educational Partnerships was delighted to visit MS 15 in the Bronx. This school is dedicated to providing its students and staff with a meaningful and productive learning environment utilizing collaboration from the community, a relevant curriculum, and connective real world experiences. MS 15 also completed the Mental Health Awareness Training that the Center for Educational Partnerships offers for elementary schools in the Bronx. On October 24th, the Fordham Graduate School of Education (GSE) hosted the New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages’s Voices United Conference. Fordham’s The Center For Educational Partnerships' Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network is a part of the state network. This conference highlighted the importance of bilingual education, and featured remarks from Dr. Betty Rosa, Commissioner of Education and President of the University of the State of New York, Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Bilingual  Education and World Languages Elisa Alvarez (pictured speaking below), and Keynote Speaker, Dr. Ayanna Cooper. An impressive student panel including high school graduates who had achieved the Seal of Biliteracy in a variety of languages shared about their experience in bilingual education and how it will shape their future. Then, participants were divided into breakout rooms to continue in discussion around best practices in bilingual education. Among the participants in the conference were Anita Batisti, PhD. Director of the CEP and Associate Dean of Fordham GSE and Acting Dean of Fordham Graduate School of Education, Ji Seon Lee (pictured below). Anita Batisti, PhD., Director of the The Center For Educational Partnerships for Educational Partnerships and Associate Dean of the Fordham Graduate School of Education, Stefanie Reda, Director of the Fordham PDRC, and Deirdre Danaher, Resource Specialist at the Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN), were honored to attend the 8th Annual Fordham Women's Summit. This event celebrated women in the professional world through two breakout sessions that worked to empower women to invest their individual talent effectively, and to consciously build their own brands. The participants were excited to join in fulfilling discussions with colleagues, witness the inspiring presentations, and recognize all the women at Fordham University and beyond dedicating themselves to making the world a better place.

Paraprofessional educators and student teachers who teach bilingual learners are essential in today’s education system; The Center For Educational Partnerships supports these educators through monthly professional development sessions presented by expert coaches in the field, such as Jane Pers and Ada Orlando. Today marks a monumental day for All Hallows High School and Fordham University. Fordham University President Tania Tetlow addressed the inaugural coeducational class at All Hallows High School to celebrate the first year of the coeducational model. The Center For Educational Partnerships at Fordham University has a long standing partnership with All Hallows High School that we look forward to continuing during this exciting time. Pictured below at the inaugural address are Anita Batisti, PhD., Associate Dean of Partnerships and Director of the Center for Educational Partnerships, All Hallows Principal Nick Corrado, and Stefanie Reda, Director of the NYS Fordham PDRC.

At a town hall for Bronx public school principals hosted by Associate Commissioner for the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages for the New York State Department of Education Elisa Alvarez and The Center For Educational Partnerships at the Fordham Graduate School of Education, school leaders engaged in dialogue around the best practices for teaching students who are learning English. Also present at the town hall were the Fordham University sponsored programs (pictured below), including the Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network for New York City (RBERN-NYC) represented by Director diane howitt, the New York City Community Schools Technical Assistance Center (CSTAC-NYC) represented by Director Kevin Coyne, Ed.D., the Mental Health Awareness Training Program (MHAT) for the Bronx (funded by the National Institute of Health and Fordham University), represented by Anita Batisti, PhD. , Associate Dean and Director of the Center for Educational Partnerships, and the STOP School Violence Project for the Bronx (funded by the Department of Justice and Fordham University), represented by Director Christopher Korolczuk, Ed.D. Participants in the town hall discussed and learned about resources available to educators from the New York State Department of Education and Fordham University’s The Center For Educational Partnerships; it was a fruitful day of conversation and learning!

Anita Batisti, PhD., Associate Dean of the Fordham Graduate School of Education, and Director of the The Center For Educational Partnerships had the pleasure of visiting PS 705 Brooklyn Arts and Science Elementary School and school leader Michael Pizzingrillo this week. PS 705 is a bustling school that aims to celebrate the individual gifts of every student. It has a dual language Spanish/English program and a school wide enrichment program to help students “cultivate their strengths into powerful assets that serve the student and society.” We look forward to continuing to witness the amazing work at PS 705 this school year!
