New research links maternal influenza infection during pregnancy with a higher risk of childhood seizures, especially febrile seizures. It did not appear to elevate the risk of developing epilepsy. The study calls for further research to understand the connection between prenatal infection and childhood neurological development. Researchers from 15 countries, led by Amsterdam UMC, have developed a way to predict which patients are at risk of epilepsy after a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVT). CVT is a type of stroke that typically affects women between the ages of 20 and 50. The prediction model is now available worldwide free of charge, and the research it is based on is published in JAMA Neurology. 🧠 Neurosurgery for drug-resistant epilepsy requires capturing seizure activity to locate the precise areas in the brain triggering seizures. The team at Boston Children's Hospital Epilepsy Center has piloted a new method for mapping seizure zones which is noninvasive, and provides valuable information a traditional EEG reading cannot. 📖 Click here to learn more: https://loom.ly/UXkWUQ8 #EpilepsyAwareness #EpilepsyResearch #EpilepsyActionAustralia

💜 Exciting progress in safer epilepsy treatment for women! 💜 Researchers at the The University of Queensland have made a breakthrough that may enable women with epilepsy to safely access the highly effective medication sodium valproate during pregnancy. By using lab-grown mini-spinal cords, the team identified that combining the medication with another drug, Rapamycin, could prevent spinal malformations in foetuses. This innovation brings us closer to safer epilepsy management during pregnancy. 🔗 Read more: https://loom.ly/ZZHfZzs #EpilepsyAwareness #MedicalBreakthrough #SaferPregnancy #EpilepsyActionAustralia

🌡️ Heatwaves and Epilepsy🌡️ A new study from UCL reveals that heatwaves may increase abnormal brain activity and seizures in some people with epilepsy. Researchers found that temperatures above 28°C were linked to more frequent seizures during intracranial electroencephalography (icEEG) tests. This important research underscores the need for more studies on how climate impacts neurological health.
