Today, on International Day for Biological Diversity, we want to emphasize the importance of preserving and reinventing our food systems in the Mediterranean. Biological diversity resources form the foundation of our civilizations. Fish supply 20% of the animal protein consumed by approximately 3 billion people, while plants contribute over 80% of the human diet. The publication 'Youth Commitment to Sustainable Food Systems' gives voice to young researchers and entrepreneurs with ideas and projects for a different kind of rural and agricultural development. Join us today at 4 PM for an insightful webinar! We will be focusing on our recent research, "Assessing the Impact of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) on Land Use in the case of Slovenia, the European Periphery." This event investigates what post-growth agriculture could look like in Europe. The panel discussion will zoom in on the CAP and current policy framework, as well as on practices that can enhance a just agricultural transition. Speakers include members of national Parliaments, the European Parliament, farmers union, and civil society representatives. How has the CAP transformed land use patterns, agricultural practices, and rural livelihoods of small farmers in Slovenia, reflecting broader dynamics of land concentration and equity in the European periphery? Don’t miss this important discussion organized by Commons Network, Oxfam Novib, Friends of the Earth Europe, Wellbeing Economy Alliance - WEAll, European Environmental Bureau
We are thrilled to announce the last confirmed speakers for Monday’s panel discussion 'A just transition beyond growth - Which agricultural practices to support?' 🤩 Next to MEP Cristina Guarda (The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament), House of Lords member Natalie Bennett, Farmers union (European Federation of Food, Agriculture, and Tourism Trade Unions (EFFAT), representative Ivan Ivanov, Paola Laini and Jean Matthieu Thévenot from La Via Campesina, we will have Ajda Pistotnik, director of Policy Lab and regional MP Andreas Lackner. Ajda will bring a critical perspective on the CAP from her research with Slovenian farmers, while Andreas will talk from his experience as chairman of the Austrian Green Farmers. The panel will zoom in on farming and food system practices for post-growth, as well as on the policy reforms needed to enhance them! 🗓️ Monday (15th July), 16.00-17.30 (GMT+2) 🔗Register here: https://lnkd.in/efpWwYxg

Thanks to the Australian Farm Institute for the opportunity to contribute to the most recent edition of the Farm Policy Journal. Australian agriculture benefits greatly from crop protection products like herbicides, insecticides and fungicides but being a small market on the other side of the world means our farmers miss out on the full benefit of these technologies. While it is beyond the realm of government to grow the market for these technologies there are policy solutions available that will accommodate and ameliorate the impact of our isolation and the smallness of our market. These policy solutions will also improve the resilience of the Australian market for crop protection products to external shocks.
Overcoming vulnerabilities in the agricultural input marketplace is not the kind of problem that attracts headlines, but it’s an issue crucial to our continued competitive participation in trade and a lynchpin in the end costs of food and fibre. By applying the Australian agricultural innovation mindset to the issue, we have an opportunity to be better than resilient – to create anti-fragile supply chains. The latest edition of the Farm Policy Journal tackles this topic, with contributions from: • Garry Goucher, Agricultural Economist • Justin Maroccia, AFI Senior Researcher • Ross Kingwell and Hemali Kanthilanka, Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC) • Justin Crosby, Director - Government and Strategic Relations CropLife Australia AFI members and subscribers can log in for the Journal here 👉 https://buff.ly/3KCjyXi Available for non-members to purchase here 👉 https://buff.ly/3y1XV0k
