Short update over #precisionfermentation (PF) ingredients.
🌎 2024 witnessed a surge in approvals in the #unitedstates (particularly self-affirmed GRAS) : New Culture, Vivici, 21st.BIO, All G, and Oobli. With a different fermentation process, Solar Foods' protein also received a thumbs-up.
#China granted its first PF approval (lactoferrin from All G!!), and
#Canada also with Remilk's beta-lactoglobulin (BLG).
Currently approved list of ingredients made through PF: BLG, LF, casein, ovalbumin, monellin (sweet protein), leghemoglobin.
💸 A still short amount of capital is being invested… a difficult period for start-ups, especially to scale up. VC focus is turning into agritech, regenerative agriculture, food waste, etc. Government support is key to unlocking full potential !
What to expect in 2025 ?
➡️ Further regulation developments in the US: for caseins (Standing Ovation, Those Vegan Cowboys , …), BLG (Bon Vivant, …), ovalbumin (Onego Bio), LF (Helaina), etc. Growth in other countries is also awaited, especially in Asia (hoping for TurtleTree approval in SG), and plenty more.
➡️ Driving costs down through continuous fermentation (Cauldron Ferm, Pow.Bio), or feeding microbes methane alike Unibio.
➡️ Developments toward price parity with partnerships & a turn toward high-value products with bioactives.
➡️ Other technology developments, such as #Plantmolecularfarming (with for example Alpine Bio capable to make all 4 caseins within soy cells in the US) #microalgae (Brevel), #microbialfermentation, etc.
