🎉 Today, May 29, a special commemorative stamp was issued by the Sri Lanka Post to celebrate IWMI's 40th anniversary, and four decades of partnership with Sri Lanka. The Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, visited IWMI's global headquarters in Colombo and received the first stamp. 💧 Since 1984, IWMI has contributed to shaping water management practices in Sri Lanka and the world. In the last 40 years, IWMI has grown in scale, impact and areas of research — from an institute focused on water for agriculture to a global leader in integrated water management. Looking forward, IWMI will continue to contribute to Sri Lanka's water security and climate goals. #OneCGIAR #40YearsinSriLanka #WaterSecurity

IWMI under its CGIAR NEXUS Gains Initiatives, organized a 3-day training on Hydrological Modeling using SWAT+ Model, in Islamabad. This intensive training gave participants a comprehensive understanding of the SWAT+ Model, a state-of-the-art tool for simulating hydrological processes. Muhammad Jehanzeb Masud Cheema Researcher/Deputy Country Representative, Asif N., Researcher at IWMI Pakistan and Dr. Sikandar Ali, Consultant, led the sessions and offered guidance and support to the participants. The SWAT+ Model is a widely used, open-source hydrological modeling tool that simulates the impact of land management practices on water, sediment, and nutrient yields. A significant outcome of the training was expanding the 'community of practice' approach, led by the IWMI team. This initiative brought together around 10 organizations, including irrigation departments from KP, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, Water & Sewerage Authorities, PARC, PCRWR, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Federal Ministry of Climate Change, academia, and representatives from the industrial sector. This community of practice will facilitate the discussion of common challenges, the sharing of knowledge, and the development of solutions for implementation. The successful completion of this training program marks a significant milestone in enhancing the capacity of professionals to address complex water management challenges as they are now equipped to apply new skills and knowledge to drive positive change in their respective fields. #OneCGIAR

🌊 Innovating Water Management in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 🌊 IWMI under the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-funded Water Resource Accountability in Pakistan (#WRAP) programme, hosted a transformative workshop in Peshawar to address Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s critical water resource challenges. With groundwater depletion at 1.44 meters annually and nearly 45% of water samples deemed unsafe, the event brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to develop sustainable solutions. The workshop featured key discussions on Water Resources Assessment, Groundwater Management Information System (#GMIS), and Early Drought Warning System (#EDWS). Officials from the KP Water Regulatory Authority discussed the role of the KP Water Act 2020 in enabling integrated water management and cooperating to ensure sustainable water use for future generations. By addressing institutional and data gaps, the workshop proposed innovative strategies such as aquifer recharge through small dams and conjunctive water use, ensuring better resource management and resilience against climate impacts. This event is a milestone in KP’s journey toward water sustainability. #WaterManagement #ClimateResilience #OneCGIAR

🌿 Did you know? In Jordan and Lebanon, the Hima system, and in Tunisia, Gdel, are ancestral grazing practices still in use today. These systems restrict livestock grazing in specific rangeland areas, enabling vegetation recovery through rotational grazing. This approach strengthens the land’s and communities’ resilience to drought and climate change. While Hima is recognized as a Nature-based Solution (NbS) and NbS approaches gain traction in policy and development, scaling them remains a challenge. Through Al Murunah, IWMI’s flagship NbS project in the MENA region, we’re establishing a foundation to normalize and formalize such practices, ensuring their potential is realized. 👉 on.cgiar.org/4gIsbhR Louise Sarant #NatureBasedSolutions #OneCGIAR
