Despite the existence of many policy and technical instruments (tools) available for groundwater governance, efforts to apply them are often ineffective. In this recent IFPRI blog, Ruth Meinzen-Dick and Bryan Bruns suggest it is useful to think of how key actors can use combinations of tools and approaches to improve their knowledge, motivation, and agency to solve groundwater problems. Global agricultural markets have been in a constant state of uproar over the past 5 years. Trade wars between major trading nations such as China, US and Australia, supply chain disruptions due to the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, crisis in the Middle East and export restrictions have diverted supplies, altered trading patterns, increased price volatility which often makes markets less efficient and more costly. On January 13th, a seminar by IFPRI and Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) will examine the impacts of recent trade disruptions in agri-food commodities and explore how markets can build resilience to possible future disruptions. 🔍 🎫 Register here: ️ https://bit.ly/-trade- CGIAR #IFPRIPolicySeminar

🔍 How can we increase demand for fruit and vegetables in #Tanzania? By placing communities at the center of solutions. In partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and IFPRI, the CGIAR Research Initiative on Fruit & Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets (FRESH) is collaborating with Tanzanian stakeholders to co-design strategies that make fruit & vegetables more desirable. Using GAIN’s Human-Centered Design (HCD) Toolkit, a workshop was held in August to guide participants through the process of creating intervention concepts tailored to their communities’ needs. 📽️ Watch the full video for an inside look at the workshop, featuring insights from facilitators and participants: https://lnkd.in/eFAU9ZzZ 🔗 Learn more about FRESH: https://lnkd.in/gwWQaQQM 🔗 Access GAIN’s HCD Toolkit: https://lnkd.in/eNc6sBf7

Groundwater is a vital common pool resource that supplies nearly half of all water for domestic use, one-quarter of irrigation water, and one-third of industrial water supply globally. While a variety of institutional “tools” (policy instruments) have been used in efforts to improve groundwater governance, examples of success—such as deliberate and effective action to halt or reverse aquifer depletion, prevent pollution, or protect groundwater-dependent ecosystems— are rare and context-dependent. Research on groundwater governance highlights the potential of promising combinations of approaches and tools.
