There seems to be accelerated activity towards integrating 5G/satellite connectivity in the past few weeks. Intelsat and Softbank target ubiquitous coverage with 5G/satellite combo, while Ericson has joined the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA) to further Direct-to-Device (D2D) and IoT Connectivity The idea is to integrate terrestrial networks (cellular networks) and space-based or non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) to deliver connectivity ‘to any device, anytime, anywhere. Currently less than 40% of land area is reported to be connected by mobile networks. Connectivity through non-terrestrial networks require deployment of separate and specialized devices. However, integration of non-terrestrial networks (satellite coverage) with land-based cellular networks could allow for seamless connectivity through one device and one account. The use cases of such ubiquitous connectivity are plenty – Rural and remote connectivity, Disaster recovery and emergency services, Urban air mobility, Maritime communication, etc.

In my session, I explored how Wavelength enables real-time HQ Video through immersive NiceDCV Pixelstreaming experiences in a Meta Quest 3 Headset by benefiting from reduction in network distance and offering predictable performance.
