Great to see more positive news in terms of 5G rollouts – this time MASORANGE stating that 3,530 municipalities now able to access 5G services in Spain – that’s 86% of the population. By the end of 2024, they expect nearly 100% of Spanish municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants, which approximately 750 towns, will be connected to 5G. This week, the 3GPP SA#106 meeting was held in Madrid, bringing together leading companies in the telecom industry to continue advancing 5G and 6G standardization. One of the key focuses of this meeting was finalizing the 5G-Advanced topics for Release 20, which will be the final release of 5G-Advanced. After productive discussions, we identified the core topics for inclusion in this release: Key Topics for Release 20 - Ambient IoT (AIoT) AIoT, or passive IoT, aims to connect devices with minimal capabilities (e.g., limited battery) to the 5G network. This can unlock new business opportunities for mobile operators by enabling cost-efficient connectivity for applications like logistics and secure management of RFID tags. Building on work started in Release 19, Release 20 will enhance AIoT with features like mobility and roaming support. - Energy Efficiency Introduced in Release 19, this topic focuses on generating reports about energy consumption across 5G services. Release 20 will expand the scope to include features like CO2 emissions reporting, contributing to sustainability in telecommunications. - AI/ML Enhancements The groundwork for AI/ML in the 5G Core was laid in Release 19, enabling optimizations like signaling efficiency and storm forecasting. Release 20 will enhance these capabilities further by adding features such as charging and security aspects, UE data collection, and support for RAG (Radio Access Grouping) technology. - Integrated Sensing and Communication This topic aims to enable NR-based sensing across the end-to-end 5G architecture, paving the way for more accurate and integrated sensing solutions. - Satellite Integration in 5G Architecture (Phase 4) The final phase of integrating non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) into the 5G ecosystem will be addressed in Release 20, completing the vision for satellite connectivity. Having public information about prices in #Telco #ESP is a rare event. But the people of Finetwork (a Spanish #MVNO) have recently published its #Barometer with a major data point: on average a customer pays 53,90 €/m by its FBB+Mobile services! But beyond this we can, with this data set, play with brands and some technical service attributes. We have identified 3 "premium brands" and 4 "Low Cost" from 18 included in the barometer. And we have drawn some U-Shapped curves about the FBB speed and the MBB monthly data allowance! The "Premium bonus" is about 25 €/m, so construct a Brand eventually pays

📱 The merger between MÁSMÓVIL and Orange, finalised in March 2024, transforms the market structure by reducing the number of large network operators from four to three (#MásOrange, #Telefónica (Movistar) and #Vodafone). 🚦 The merger-related obligation to release any spectrum over 140MHz and transfer it to other operators creates an opportunity for #DIGI to become the new fourth mobile network operator.  📢 More information about the state of the market in #Spain in my report here.

Potentially an innovative model being worked on in Spain to help MNOs improve their networks across the country, focusing the biggest improvements on areas where there are fewest MNOs, ie rural coverage locations. The deal seems to allow the MNOs to share spectrum in the newly released 700MHz band, allowing MNOs that are the only one present in a given area much more bandwidth then they would otherwise be able to deploy, therefore dramatically improving the capacity in the area. Neutral host networks are greener and more cost-effective than traditional 5G networks. We’re excited to share the findings from a new independent study authored by ABI Research and commissioned by Boldyn Networks, that explores how neutral host networks (NHNs) are transforming the way mobile operators deliver 5G. This industry-first study reveals that NHNs are up to 47% more cost-effective and 38% greener than traditional standalone 5G deployments.
