In our recent survey with hospitality executives, 65% of respondents identified regulatory compliance as the main driver for their organisation’s sustainability strategy. Do you know where the term greenwashing comes from? 🤔 ….Hotels! 🏨 🧼 Specifically, a 1986 essay by environmentalist Jay Westerveld. He argued putting pressure on guests to save the planet by reusing towels, when in reality the motivation was to save on energy bills, was less than honest (see point 6 below). I remember sceptically scrunching my nose up at these messages when I was young, and it’s fair to say greenwashing tactics have become more sophisticated since then. Four decades on, one disgruntled hotel guest has transformed into a global maze of consumer protection regulation. 🌍 More change is on the horizon for how companies can communicate their sustainability efforts with customers, with customer expectations shifting too. 💚 So I’m all the more excited to be part of the Co of Good & Co. alongside some other superb sustainability experts who I’m thrilled to connect with.
