🌍 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Clinical Trials is essential for ensuring that medical research benefits all populations. Our latest blog (Immaculate Nevis MD, MSc,PhD, MBA) explores how systematic literature reviews (SLRs) play a critical role in supporting the FDA’s DEI initiatives. In this post, I discuss why diversity in clinical trials is crucial for better health outcomes. As we continue to push for more diverse and representative clinical trials, it's vital to use all tools at our disposal to improve outcomes for everyone. The AAMC’s Learn Serve Lead Annual Meeting never disappoints. I’m currently in Atlanta with my team, collaborating and engaging with other Deans and their leadership teams. This conference is designed to unite academic leaders to tackle the challenges facing medical education, healthcare delivery, and research. Key discussions have highlighted crucial topics such as the impact of AI on healthcare, advancing health equity, and the importance of humanism in medicine. Our experience here has been incredibly productive, and we are learning how to best serve our students and faculty to shape the future of medical education. The opening session showcased a thought-provoking and inspiring address by Scott Pelley, the esteemed anchor of 60 MINUTES and a recipient of 51 Emmy Awards. He delivered powerful messages about the importance of finding courage and fostering connection in an era of increasing polarization. Scott skillfully examined the “meaning of life” through the perspectives of mission-driven, resilient surgeons working in war zones around the world, including Ukraine and Gaza. He also highlighted the remarkable leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine. Dr. Kimberly Manning underscored the enduring value of patient-centered care, and AI emerged as a central theme, with experts like Dr. James Weinstein, from Microsoft, discussing its transformative potential alongside the ethical concerns it raises. Other panels focused on the role of medical institutions in promoting racial and health equity, with Dr. Uché Blackstock, MD advocating for intentional actions to dismantle systemic racism within healthcare. Overall, it has been an amazing experience! Islam Mohamed, B. >>>NEW Article Connecting the #ElectronicMedicalRecords in the #EuropeanUnion – Where Do We Stand and Where Does It Go? DOI: https://lnkd.in/eYWjFxSv The editorial discusses the integration of #eHealthsystems in the European Union through the #eHealth Digital Service Infrastructure (#eHDSI) project. The EU's unique approach to integration involves overcoming language and system differences across 27 member states. The European Directive 2011/24/EU emphasizes #patientsrights in cross-border #healthcare, pushing for #interoperability in national eHealth systems. The eHDSI project involves National Contact Points for eHealth (#NCPeH) in each country, connecting through standardized interfaces. The project covers #PatientSummary (PS) exchange, electronic prescription (eP), dispensation (eD), and Original Clinical Documents (#OrCD) exchange. Although eHDSI seems to be a viable project, its real-world usage is currently low. This can be attributed to technical complexities and incomplete implementation. Broader use should be pursued instead of expanding the system's capabilities. The complexity of the eHDSI and its implementation could pose additional challenges, and widespread use may not be achieved before 2030. The Story Behind the Need for MedInclude at Grand River Hospital During an internal assessment at Grand River Hospital, the hospital’s Office of Innovation & Research identified a critical gap in medical translation for patient communication. Patients were struggling to understand their care plans, treatment options, and health education due to language barriers—a challenge that could no longer be overlooked. 💬 As shared by the hospital’s Innovation Team: "There was a sheer need to have medical information translated into the patient’s language... This was a big problem that needed to be addressed." MedInclude is proud to partner with Grand River Hospital to ensure that every patient understands their care, regardless of the language they speak. Because clear communication saves lives. Clinical research is notoriously challenging, with a myriad of a factors like study start-up, protocol complexity, principal investigator (PI) involvement, community engagement, patient recruitment and retention, or any of a wealth of other factors. Few, if any, sure-fire combinations of ingredients have proven to work for every audience in every setting. Two #ACRP2024 panels included seasoned experts who shared valuable insights on promoting efficiency and inclusivity in clinical trials, offering their "secret sauce" recipe for success.
