This week I worked 3 hours at my Internship At the start of the week I was taught about the bean roasting process. This is where I learned how to start up the custom built roasting machine and set the profile for the flavor of chocolate selected. Once I had distributed 12 Kg of beans into 2 buckets I set the roaster profile with Mr. Picton and waited for it to warm up to the right temperature. As it was warming the tour for the day came in so I began working on packaging milk chocolate eggs. While everyone else was busy a customer came inside looking to purchase from Maverick from the first time. This was my first time helping a customer at my internship so I was focused on figuring out what he was looking for. He said that he was buying chocolate for his wife and mentioned a taste for dark chocolate and coffee. After a short discussion of the selection I sold a Ruya bar, a 75% Vietnam bar, a 80% Tanzania bar, as well as a mini milk. After this I had returned to the milk chocolate eggs and finished packaging the rest we had. To finish up the day I crushed 2 blocks of dark chocolate to melt it in the Selmi machine. This process was fun and new as I was able to work directly with the chocolate. The next day I worked this week I started by working on the packaging for the white chocolate bars that had been put into their slips. After some time working on this I had the opportunity to get an overview of some of Mavericks digital marketing strategies as well as recent marketing campaigns. There I was introduced to marketing software as well as its capabilities in regards to drawing in customers. What this week taught me is that marketing is not simply selling a product but it is the way of bringing attention to a product or brand and highlighting what it will give you. This relates to our study of digital marketing strategies and how brands can connect their products to various demographics of customers. #TheBusinessLaunchExperience @TheLaunchBusinessExperience

During my Internship as a General Manager, I gained valuable experience collaborating with a team of a dozen employees on improving operations, inventory management, customer service, and community outreach for a local business. The focus of my internship was to learn how to improve business operations and use inventory management systems to improve food costs. This involved creating spreadsheets on current inventory and forecasting future inventory to work within food cost goals while keeping up with the flow of goods throughout the business to project future orders. In my role as General Manager, I worked with the corporate office on improving company policies and procedures, built relationships with the community, focused on community engagement, and fixed bottom-line operations to eliminate waste. I got to work on Local Store Marketing to help drive sales by over 20% while focusing on the schools and the churches to help build brand awareness. In doing so we used social media and in-person visits to local businesses to build relationships with potential customers and promote our brand. The in-house focus for the General Manager was to make sure the business achieved its food cost, labor, and sales goals while following company policies and procedures. In doing so I needed to make sure all the employees were professionally trained and oversee the product correctly. In my time with the business, our food costs were drastically improved through proper inventory management and weekly counts of products. Every item was portioned to be used in a specific way that would help the business stay within the food cost goals and to stay within the labor costs goals I would project future sales using the POS system to make weekly schedules that stayed within our 14-16 percent labor target. During my internship, I learned how to use data to manage the flow of inventory and manage the operations of a business. The General Manager would source all the goods for the business, making sure the business got the best quality and pricing around. I would use our in-house POS system to help with distribution to customers to ensure our speed of service was top quality. My experience as a General Manager was extremely helpful, showing me the ins and outs of top-line operations and inventory management. I was able to learn how to oversee the operations of a business with a dozen employees and learn how to use data analysis for purchasing, sourcing, and inventory management. The tools that I learned for my internship will help me throughout my journey in supply chain and have helped me fine-tune my skills to prepare myself for the next chapter in my career. #UTDBSSCM and #hireJSOM

✨ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT ✨ Meet Julia Votano, an incoming senior from Frisco, Texas who is majoring in marketing with a minor in data analytics. She is currently a Strategic Sales intern for the eCommerce team at Colgate-Palmolive. On campus she is involved in the Sustainable Fashion Club and Delta Gamma where she serves as the Director of Awards. She was also a barista at Hill Coffee Company for the past 2 years. Check out her Q&A below and tune in tomorrow as she takes over our Instagram story to show a day in the life! 🏢 How did you secure your internship with Colgate-Palmolive? I attended the career fair in the fall and loved Colgate-Palmolive’s booth. I had really great conversations with the employees there and followed up by reaching out over email to set up an interview. A few weeks later I interviewed and received a call back offering me the internship position. 💼 How have your positions in Delta Gamma and the Sustainable Fashion Club prepared you for your internship? My position in Delta Gamma as the Director of Awards prepared me for my internship by significantly improving my public speaking skills, as I speak in front of around 400 members during weekly chapter meetings. Additionally, my involvement in the Sustainable Fashion Club was beneficial because of Colgate-Palmolive’s commitment to sustainability. My experience with sustainability aligned with the company’s values. In the office we compost, recycle, and do everything we can to be as sustainable as possible. 💡 What advice would you give to your freshman year self? Some of the best advice I could give my freshman year self is to put yourself out there, as following and pursuing opportunities has been instrumental in helping me grow. Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. College is completely different from anything I had experienced before, and no one knows exactly what they’re doing at first. Any questions you have, someone else in the room most likely has the same ones. #WaltonCollege #UARK #StudentSpotlight

Firsthand Revelations and Thoughts during the second week of my Internship: 1. Knowing how to ask questions is an art. There's a lot of difference between asking "Do you like our product?" and "How do you like our product?" Unless we have established it to a certain degree that the respondent likes our product to some extent, we might not get an accurate answer to the latter as it might create a pressure of answering even if there's nothing they like about it. 2. I used to think, "Why should I smile looking at someone I don't know?" No. Smile always works. A "Hello" smile. ALWAYS. 3. I wonder if we are all associating purple color with chocolate. What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you see a purple color packet? If that's Dairy Milk by Cadbury UK then imagine how successfully they have positioned their products in our minds (like it happens to me! Also because I love eating chocolates). 4. Retail stores are an important part of our grocery shopping routine. So much that, when we think of "buying", we think of the scenario of asking for the product in the retail store in our minds. How long until there's change in this 'autopilot' thought? 5. I spoke to few people who belong to the 'Millennials' category who described the below package as 'Clumsy-ish' which, the 'Gen Z' referred to as 'Attractive'. So, is Millenial's 'Clumsy' attractive to Gen Z? If you have anything to share about what I am thinking, you are welcome! #Thoughts #MyLearnings #SummerInternship #ConsumerBehavior #SalesAndMarketing

This kind of benchmarking is essential for refining positioning strategies. 3. It was during my first internship at Snackible, where I learnt about my passion. Snackible was a budding venture in the world of healthy snacking when I joined them as a Business Development Associate intern. Over the course of six months, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the art of client acquisition and retention. My role involved convincing clients to try Snackible's products and purchase their assorted hampers. Little did I know that I would be working with renowned brands there, securing orders for 200-400 hampers filled with nutritious snacks for their employees or festive occasions. It was an incredible experience to witness the positive impact of our offerings on the well-being of these corporate communities.Beyond just sales, I gained invaluable insights into the importance of exceptional customer service. From onboarding clients to managing their needs and delivering a seamless experience, I learned the intricacies of cultivating long-lasting relationships with consumers. Snackible taught me the fundamentals of business development, instilling in me an appreciation for the food industry that has only grown stronger over time. It was during this internship that I discovered my true passion for the world of food and the impact it can have on people's lives. Although I have since pursued other internships with companies like McCain, my experience at Snackible remains the most cherished and formative of them all. It was here that I learned the art of client acquisition, the value of customer service, and the joy of working in an industry that nourishes both body and soul. My top 3 learnings from this internship, that might help you also are- 1. Client acquisition and retention strategies. 2. Importance of customer service for building lasting customer relationships. 3. Discovering my passion for the food industry and its impact on people's well-being. Which was your first internship and what did it teach you? I’d love to hear about it. #founder #internship #healthylifestyle #food
